1st TRIMESTER MUST-HAVES

First Trimester Maternity Must Haves First Trimester Maternity Must Haves First Trimester Maternity Must Haves First Trimester Maternity Must Haves

There have been a lot of new pregnancy announcements the past few weeks: Ashley Simpson, Hilaria Baldwin, Tamara Mowry-Housley and Zooey Deschanel to name a few celebrities. AND also just as exciting, a bunch of my girlfriends came out with the big news too! The texts and emails are flying in from my girls, “What do I need”? “Where do I start?” “My boobs are sooooo big…I need new bras _ stat!”  So, in honor of the latest Hollywood pregnant fashionistas, as well as the lovely ladies in my life who are still in their 1st trimesters or just got through those first 12 weeks of baby bump bliss, I thought I’d talk 1st trimester MUST-HAVES.

Lucky for me, I got to comprise this list with help from style maven and fellow blogger Brooke from Somewhere, Lately. Brooke and her friend Meggan came together to create their awesome blog that documents their love of fashion, beauty and all things cool! It’s one of my favorite destinations for outfit and beauty inspiration. Brooke’s got the cool-girl style thing down! She has an amazing eye and always looks effortlessly chic. She’s a big fan of A Pea in the Pod Maternity and has been choosing pieces from the fall line throughout her whole pregnancy; fortunately I had the chance to ask her what some of her favorite pieces are. She’s sported Paige and DL1961 maternity jeans and tops from our namesake line, just to name a few!

To begin, let’s discuss how those first few weeks are full of emotions, excitement, expanding breasts and bumps! For many women it is also a time where you may not want to share your big news yet. Many women wait that first trimester, limiting the big news to just family and very close friends. So in the beginning as your body is just getting adjusted to pregnancy, you are trying to look and feel your best AND maybe conceal your changing figure.

Now’s a good time to start investing in versatile side-ruched tees, plus easy everyday maternity leggings- Brooke agrees! These are two essentials that will take you through your entire pregnancy, so I suggest adding them to your arsenal early on. I also hate to see women struggling to fit into their pre-pregnancy jeans. There is nothing more uncomfortable than trying to bulge your new waistline into non-stretchy denim. The beauty of the Secret Fit Belly® panel is that it’s invisible. I recommend transitioning into at least one or two new pairs while your pregnancy news is fresh. The fabrics and materials that the designers choose have awesome stretch and recovery so they will fit well throughout those 9 months. The panel is easily covered with your top, so if you aren’t ready to let the secret out, there is no need to worry. Brooke loves the designer ones, but there are so many choices from both Motherhood Maternity and A Pea in the Pod.

Keeping comfortable is key! So is having a wardrobe that can transition with you through the trimesters. Maternity yoga pants are another great idea to keep you looking cute and comfortable. For bloggers like Brooke, this cosiness is necessary, since sitting down for long periods of time can be so uncomfortable, especially when expecting! A luxe maternity sweater is another good choice that is soft, has an easy fit, can grow with you and is super chic in any wardrobe. Together, this look works year round.

Maternity bras are critical additions. Your bust-line may continue to grow and perhaps will become sensitive, so switching to super soft seamless styles and sleep bras in the beginning can be a life saver. AGAIN comfort is KEY!

Brooke and I both agree on these last 3 important pieces. Keeping hydrated by drinking lots of H2O is extremely vital for you and baby. Throw a Tummy Tube in your wardrobe to help smooth out your waistline, if you aren’t wearing the Secret Fit Belly® panel. It’s great for added bump support too. And lastly, keep cozy in comfy maternity maternity pajamas. You may feel tired during that first trimester due to the changes that your bodies (and hormones) are creating! So try to relax, put your feet up, and feel the best you can while looking amazing too.

Congrats to my girls and to anyone who is newly pregnant! xoxo- Olivia

Q+A WITH LOVEJOOKIM

Love Joo Kim Love Joo Kim

Fashion blogger, foodie and mom-to-be Joo Kim of lovejookim.com has been in my fashion line-up of style influencers for some time. I love her casual downtown vibe and could totally live in her closet. She is a serious foodie too, so it’s just as much fun following her food travels as well as her outfits!

Now that she’s expecting, she’s been working pieces from A Pea in the Pod, Motherhood Maternity and Jessica Simpson Maternity into her wardrobe. The results are amazing! Joo is a huge fan of our Secret Fit Belly® jeans; she chose our DL1961 maternity jeans to style in her 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Now that she’s nearing the end of her pregnancy, I had the chance to ask her a few questions about how she’s been maintaining her effortless look. -Olivia

O Myers: What are some of your favorite maternity essentials now that you are in your 3rd trimester?

J Kim: My favorite maternity essential is a good pair of jeans and a comfy cardigan; they are literally my everyday go-to pieces. Accessories are really important during this pregnancy, since my outfits are more basic, and then I accessorize to give my outfit that little oomph it needs!

O Myers: How did you keep your sense of style throughout your pregnancy?

J Kim: I think the important thing is to try wearing things you would normally wear when you’re not pregnant. I stuck to a lot of basic dresses and paired them with chunky scarves and booties – accessorize your look and get more mileage out of your outfit!

O Myers: How has your beauty routine changed now that you are expecting?

J Kim: It’s pretty much the same. I’ve added a couple more steps like applying my belly cream and oils after my face routine. I don’t do face packs anymore, just to be safe. I would say the most important thing I do is try to hydrate myself a lot more by remembering to drink water.

O Myers: Since wearing your Secret Fit Belly® jeans, tell us why you love the fit and if you plan on wearing them later after baby.

J Kim: I absolutely loooove the fit. Secret Fit Belly® jeans are amazing; I never knew there was such a thing for pregnant women – serious lifesaver. Especially during the colder months, a good pair of jeans is so important! The color and wash of the jeans are so chic that I probably will continue to wear them after my pregnancy for as long as I can.

GOLDEN GLOBES 2015 STYLE

Old Hollywood glamour, metallic and white all night! Those were some of my favorite trends from the red carpet at the 2015 Golden Globes. It’s always fun predicting what will be trending for the night and as always there are some hits and misses! All eyes were on every celebrity mom and mom-to-be!

Rosamund Pike, from Gone Girl fame, scored in a stunning white gown just 5 weeks after welcoming her baby girl. Keira Knightly took a fashion risk in a feminine custom Chanel [maternity] gown that apparently took 30 people to make! Whether you swooned over the dress or not, I have to say I admire her for staying true to her ultra-femme gamine appeal in the ruffled piece.

Chrissy Teigan, while not a mama (yet), was another of my faves in Zuhair Murad. She chose a beautiful soft pink, while so many others went even lighter in white or silver metallic, making it a trend that’s here to stay for spring. Julianne Moore went totally glam in an ombre-sequin Givenchy Couture gown. Plus, did you see Naomi Watts in that yellow Gucci gown with that divine necklace? PERFECTION.

NEW THINGS TO COME

NewYears2015_Resolutions_1-608x189 NewYears2015_Resolutions_2-608x824 NewYears2015_Resolutions_3-608x877 NewYears2015_Resolutions_4-608x983

I’ve taken some time off from work and blogging to spend the holidays with my family, but now I’m back in the swing of social media and maternity styling! Getting started off in the New Year is always exciting; it’s also a time of personal reflection, as I’m sure it is for so many of you.

In just 365 days so much has happened in my life, and really when I think back to even a few years ago, things have changed drastically. All the changes, even the challenges, have been for the better. All of you new and expecting moms, I am sure you understand that feeling! It seems like just yesterday that I got married, and then not before long, I was pregnant with my son. Then, soon after that I left my design position here at Destination Maternity to focus solely on social media, marketing and blogging. So basically, there were three huge life changes in quite a short amount of time.

Being a multi-tasking mother didn’t come naturally, but sharing the passion for my work, enjoying my family, and watching my baby grow into a toddler has. The rest has been a huge learning curve and I’m lucky to have friends, family, colleagues and fellow bloggers to share my journey with. I expected seamless transitions with each endeavor, but quickly learned you can’t be or do everything, and to think you can is just plain silly. So, relinquishing that notion that everything should feel and come easy, especially when you are juggling so much, was my biggest take-away of 2014. It actually helped lift a weight off my shoulders and made me feel OKAY about asking and accepting help from others.

I’m looking forward to more “firsts” this year. I have new travel plans with my husband, new styling sessions on the horizon and a brand new office in a different state at our corporate headquarters to look forward to! Oh… and a 2nd birthday to start planning for my little boy! As an expecting or new mom, I hope that you will be gentle with yourself in 2015. Enjoy your little ones and let me know if there are any special topics you’d like me cover in the coming months!

Warm wishes for a happy and healthy year to all of you and your families! xoxo-Olivia

FAMILY FUN: THE POLAR EXPRESS

The Polar Express The Polar Express The Polar Express

We had another fun family day this season! My husband and I always try to find opportunities to do something new with our son. Greyson loves trains, as a lot of toddlers do, so when we realized a local train was running A Polar Express in December we took full advantage! The New Hope And Ivy Railroad in New Hope, PA runs seasonal lines throughout the year that are fun for the whole family.

The ride was an hour and a half long, plus it was full of entertainment that kept the kids engaged! Note, if you have a rambunctious toddler like I do, it’s the perfect setting. We met Santa and Mrs. Claus, enjoyed hot cocoa, pretzels and live holiday music during the entire train ride. Grey had a blast! Most importantly we got to spend quality time with him and his grandparents. This is definitely something we’ll always remember and hope to start a nice tradition of doing each year.

I’ll keep the posts coming with more family fun ideas each month, so please continue to check in for lots of outdoor and seasonal plans for you and your little ones to enjoy!

Check out a list of all of the Santa Train Rides in the US for a station near you. Most of them run through January! xoxo + Happy Holidays -Olivia

WINTER NEWBORN PHOTO IDEAS

Winter Newborn Baby Photos Winter Newborn Baby Photos Winter Newborn Baby Photos Winter Newborn Baby Photos

Many new moms, myself included, have professional photos of their newborns taken to commemorate the occasion and capture the cuteness! I have my son’s newborn photos hung throughout the house, but I wanted to share them with all of you.

Greyson was born on May 28th, which is actually my birthday. However, if you look at these photos, you’d think it was the middle of winter, which is why I wanted to share them. For all of you mamas who are due in the next few months, consider using cozy wraps, blankets and hats for your baby’s props. I chose them for Grey because the colors worked perfectly in our neutral home and I knew I wanted to put them up around the house.

Cozy sweater knit blankets, scarves and hats make for fabulous photo props. I mean, how cute does Grey look all bundled up in the softness? Plus it gives loads of great texture and makes for a nice photo. We had these taken professionally by a wonderful South Jersey photographer, but you can always invest in a nice digital camera yourself. With the right light, additional adult help and lots of patience, you could take your own. Good luck and congrats! – Olivia

HOLIDAY COOKIES

Holiday Cookies Holiday Cookies Holiday Cookies

Now that I’m a wife and mom the holidays are even more fun because I get to share the spirit of the season with my husband and little one! We’ve been busy planning, playing (look for an upcoming post on our trip to The Polar Express), decorating and baking this month! Growing up I took comfort and found so much joy in the family traditions we shared. I’m sure you, like me, have holiday traditions that you remember fondly. My friend Melissa remembers the excitement of opening a special gift for every night of Hanukkah. My husband’s family gave toys to needy children in their community. My twin brother Tom and I decorated the tree every Christmas Eve with our parents. The fun of the holidays is in continuing the traditions we loved from our childhood, but also starting new ones.

Coming from a large Italian-American family, spending time with aunts, uncles, and neighbors was the best part! And of course there was fabulous food that always overflowed in our home during this time.  I looked forward to baking cookies with my mom and aunts, because it gave us a chance to be together, share stories, but also eat! We’d bake all day and all varieties of cookies, from traditional Italian recipes from my grandfather’s family like pizzelles, to classic chocolate chip, lace and spritz (the S cookies!) for a “dash of color.”

The ladies in my family are such good bakers that they’d always share these lovelies with their friends and neighbors. We’d gift out pretty spreads of them on simple dishes wrapped in cellophane, and then tie them up with a bow. It’s such a great gift, especially for those who aren’t bakers, because then they get to enjoy homemade sweets during the holidays! I’m excited to continue this tradition with my own son! At least I’d love for him to see the spectacle of a fun day of holiday baking in his own home. And I also wanted to share this fun and simple gift idea with you and yours. Enjoy and Happy Holidays! xoxo Olivia

Pizzelles:
Yield: 2dozen
Ingredients
3 eggs
3/4 cup white sugar
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
Directions
In a large bowl, beat eggs and sugar until thick. Stir in the melted butter and vanilla. Sift together the flour and baking powder, and blend into the batter until smooth.
Heat the pizzelle iron, and brush with oil. Drop about one tablespoon of batter onto each circle on the iron. You may need to experiment with the amount of batter and baking time depending on the iron. Bake for 20 to 45 seconds, or until steam is no longer coming out of the iron. Carefully remove cookies from the iron. Cool completely before storing in an airtight container.

Italian Wedding Cookies:
Yield: 6 dozen
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups unsalted butter
3/4 cup confectioners’ sugar, plus 1/3 cup, for rolling
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups finely ground blanched almonds
5 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
Directions
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Cream butter in a bowl. Gradually add confectioners’ sugar and salt. Beat until light and fluffy. Add almonds and vanilla. Blend in flour gradually and mix well. Shape into crescents using about 1 teaspoon for each cookie. Place on ungreased cookie sheets, and bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Do not brown. Cool slightly, then roll in the extra confectioners’ sugar.

Lace Cookies:

Ingredients

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup light brown sugar

1/4 cup light corn syrup

pinch of salt

1/4 cup all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled

1/2 cup finely chopped almonds

Directions

Heat oven to 375° F.
In a medium saucepan, heat the butter, sugars, corn syrup, and salt over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until smooth. Remove from heat and mix in the flour and almonds just until incorporated.
Drop level teaspoons of the batter onto parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing them 4 inches apart. Bake until golden brown, 6 to 8 minutes.
Cool on the baking sheets until firm, 8 to 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

MATERNITY DENIM: BLOGGER STYLE

StyleFile-BloggerHudson-1_608x196StyleFile-BloggerHudson-2_608x826StyleFile-BloggerHudson-3_608x672

Here’s the latest round-up of some of my favorites expecting bloggers. This season it’s all about dark denim with cool coating or leather-like finishes and these ladies all rock the look perfectly with their bumps.

Bloggers Irina Bond of Bond Girl Glam, Ananda Saba of Super Fashionable and Andee Layne of The Honeybee all have such great style that it’s no surprise they continue to look completely chic throughout their pregnancies. Both Irina and Andee are sporting DL1961’s coated Secret Fit Belly® skinny jeans. I love that Irina totally tones them down with an easy tee and our chunky maternity cardi, and Andee goes rocker glam in an all-black ensemble with chic heels and a red felt hat. It goes to show that these jeans are versatile, especially since they can even be worn after baby too.

Another fashion-forward dark skinny look I love is on Ananda, who is wearing our Secret Fit Belly® AG black skinny maternity jeans. Here she styles them with a pretty pair of flats and chic leather jacket, totally nailing the desk to dinner look. Plus, her accessories are always on point with a fabulous red lip and cat eye shades.

Take a tip from the pros and get mileage out of your maternity jeans! Also make sure to check back soon for the next blogger style post! -Olivia
