FALL FAMILY FUN: PUMPKIN PICKING

Fall Fun- Pumpkin PickingHalloween FunHalloween Fun

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year! It’s the perfect jacket weather, best for being outdoors with my boys and taking weekend day trips. It seems like everyone heads over to their local farmer’s market or pumpkin patch for a hayride and some family fun as soon as the first leaf changes. It always makes for a perfect family photo-op too, right? So, I thought I’d take the opportunity to share our family photos with you! (Share yours with us on our Instagram pages!)

My husband and I have a great routine of switching and taking turns snapping photos of each other with our son to capture our memories. A great tip he actually taught me was to takes lots of shots, and to keep them candid. We always take photos when the other is in motion and try not to set up every shot with us mugging in the camera. Capturing more candid photos make for more natural pictures, many times really capturing the true expression of the moment as opposed to a forced smile. Now don’t get me wrong, we always get some nice portraits, but more natural photos usually make for better images, especially if you want to hang them in your home.

Knowing that we would get some great photos during our trip to the pumpkin patch, I had to wear something befitting. In my usual style, I opted for a cool jacket, destructed jean, (yes, these are still maternity jeans! Just fold over the Secret Fit Belly® panel) pullover sweater, and dark shades – simple pieces that offer mucho style- perfect for our fall family day! -Olivia

CHIC THIS WEEK: THE TUXEDO JACKET

Maternity Style Tuxedo Jacket

The tuxedo jacket is a new silhouette for fall that I know I am going to love incorporating into the holidays. A great tuxedo style maternity jacket is a quintessential piece in any woman’s wardrobe, BUT it looks especially chic on a pregnant woman. Why you ask? Well, menswear styling is the perfect balance with a baby bump. The tailored look, mixed with the sharp cut and slight flare accent, define and yet camouflage the belly. It’s also a great layering item that can be dressed up with black maternity skinnies or dressed down with your favorite Secret Fit Belly® maternity denim. The options are endless.- Olivia

I recently had the chance to meet with Elizabeth Tomkins, Lithe Fitness instructor and new mom.  I love talking to other new moms about their journey through motherhood. These opportunities allow me to share ideas, time saving tips and even new fitness routines with you.  After I gave birth, I was on a search to find a new fitness routine. I loved hearing about the Lithe Method from Elizabeth. Since I am still trying to find the balance between working, spending time with Grey and time on myself, I am always eager to hear about new ways to keep in shape. Right now I am in to yoga and taking walks with Greyson around our neighborhood, because luckily it has tons of lakes and trails to keep it interesting. I’ll even sneak in some yoga stretches at home with Grey and since it’s a game for him, he plays along. This also works as an introduction into body awareness, plus it gives me a few minutes of exercise too.

My routine has definitely changed since bringing Grey into my life, as has Elizabeth’s, and I know that it will continue to evolve. What makes the transition easier is certainly having the right work-out gear, whether you’re getting fit at the gym or jogging at home. Transitioning maternity sports bras, maternity camisoles and maternity yoga pants through to an after birth wardrobe is essential for new moms trying to keep in shape. For me and Elizabeth, since we both nursed, functional nursing apparel is important as well. Elizabeth is wearing our Motherhood Maternity nursing bra and maternity camisole in these photos. She not only looks great, but she also told me how supported and comfortable she felt. Take a peek into our conversation below to learn a little about her fitness routine as a new mom. And keep in mind that whatever and however you decide to keep your mind and body healthy as a new mom, you are doing a great thing for you and your family. Just remember not to stress yourself out about getting back a rigid routine. Working with the time and assets you have available is truly the best thing to do. After reading this, though, you may fall in love with lithe! -Olivia

O Myers: Tell us a little bit about the Lithe Method and how you got involved in this regimen.
E Tomkins: I began taking classes at Lithe Method because I was so sick of dragging myself to the gym. I missed the team component of playing sports and I wanted an effective workout that would help my flexibility, balance, stamina, coordination, core strength, and cardiovascular endurance. Lithe does it all. I loved it so much that our founder and CEO, Lauren Boggi and I talked about my training to become an instructor. I took my first class about 4 years ago and I have been teaching for 3 years.

Lithe is Cardio-Cheer-Sculpting® (CCS). CCS utilizes precise cheerleading-based movements to load muscles, produce a high cardio burn, and reduce fat zones.  It targets all three zones of the body — the core, the lower body, and the upper body — so that you achieve a complete total body workout in just one hour.  Most people burn anywhere from 500-1000 calories per class, depending on the workout.  Lithe really does burn fat and sculpt muscle, yielding strong, lean bodies that still have curves.

Our classes are both cardiovascular and sculpting, with a concentration on a strong core. We have over 40 Lithe workouts that are total body, but each one also focuses on a particular area of the body.  Some workouts produce a higher cardio burn, and some emphasize sculpting more, so you can really tailor the kind of program you want, according to your goals.  But you’ll always sweat and the classes are constantly evolving with new additions, props and routines so you won’t get bored or plateau.

Most workouts incorporate our Higher Power Band System® which increases resistance to the core and decreases the impact load on the joints.  We also work on the floor, at a barre and with 3-16 lb free weights, among other wearable props. You can see some of the props on our website,www.lithemethod.com.

O Myers: As a nursing mom, what are you looking for in your postpartum activewear?
E Tomkins: I look for support, comfort and style. Actually, your Hannah clip down nursing bra is one of my favorite pieces. It allows me to seamlessly transition from breastfeeding my son at home, to teaching in the studio without an outfit change.  I can get in front of class confident that everything will, ahem, stay in place while feeling that I look good. The cut of the nursing bra is so supportive and flattering, plus it comes in bright colors and a stellar stripe. I’ve even had clients who aren’t moms come and ask me where they can get that bra!

O Myers: How has your daily fitness routine changed since becoming a mom?
E Tomkins: I quickly learned (as I’m sure most moms do) once the baby came that my time was no longer my own. The biggest thing for me is to remember to have patience with myself; some days, the workout just doesn’t happen. I believe it is important to make time for yourself, but occasionally, that means taking a nap or reading or doing something else you find fulfilling. Actually, this has made me really enjoy my time in the studio more and find joy in feeling my strength return and just getting my body moving. I used do a little bit of ab work next to my son while he was in the ExerSaucer©, but now he is too big for that and he wants to climb all over me. Looks like I need a new plan…

WHAT TO WEAR/WHERE: BABY SHOWER

W2WW_Shower-1_608x257W2WW_Shower-2_608x829W2WW_Shower-3_608x1001

So many women come to me with the same question…what should I wear to my baby shower? A baby shower should be a celebratory time with family and friends, yet just the thought of a baby shower for so many women sends them into a tizzy. I understand though; I was there too! Since most showers are given during the last trimester, your bump is at its biggest and you may not be feeling so fabulous. If you are like I was with swollen ankles and bouts of Braxton Hicks, then you crave being comfortable AND looking good too. Hello- photo op!

First and foremost, I always suggest wearing a dress that is soft. Either a jersey knit maternity dress or an easy silk maternity shift is a great option for the last trimester. While I’m a big believer in neutrals colors and have a sea of black and greys in my closet, I always think wearing a color makes such a feminine statement. Plus, brighter colors pop in pictures, attracting the attention away from your bigger bump or the other insecurities you may be feeling. If you do go with a black dress, try to choose one that has a detail or textured fabric for some added interest. It’s also important to remember to have the right maternity underwear and outfit foundations, especially when you’ll be spending some time at your shower. Maternity camisoles and the right pregnancy bra can make all the difference. These seamless maternity styles will smooth and support you underneath while keeping you comfortable.

When shopping for your baby shower keep in mind that it’s also an excellent time to stock up on bras, especially if you will be breastfeeding when the baby arrives. Destination Maternity offers a great clip down nursing feature, but can also be worn as a supportive maternity bra. This way you won’t have to make a trip back to the store with a 10 day old baby. (Not going to happen!) Accessories can add some more interest to your look too. Accessorizing is a must to balance out your baby bump, but just remember to stash a pair of flats for when your feet need a rest. Happy dressing ladies and enjoy your day! -Olivia

NEW MOM MUSTS

Olivia_NewMom-1_608x654New Mom MustsNew Mom Musts

So I’ve been talking a lot lately about being a new mom and some of the pieces that are essential in the days and months after you bring baby home. Check out the post I did earlier this month: What to Wear: New Mom Edition, where I gave my picks for some great new mom pieces. All this new mom talk got me reminiscing to when Grey was just an infant. I’ve been going through all of the photos from those first few days home from the hospital up until today. I am in awe at how big my little boy is getting and how time flies!

I will always cherish those moments, and they definitely reminded me that I have to get on top of that scrap-book I’ve been meaning to put together for Greyson. Flipping through those photos made me think about you guys, so I thought I’d share some photos and some of my personal favorite maternity pieces and pregnancy products I needed as a new mom! All of these items I still use today, almost 17 months after bringing my little man home- so that’s proof that you’ll get mileage out of these!

For Greyson, his two favorites were and still are his swaddles and Sophie the Giraffe. These super soft cotton swaddles do triple duty. They act as a swaddle, burp cloth, and nursing cover. I love them!  Sophie is a teether that Grey used as an infant and still does. This adorable giraffe also acts as a sense stimulator for babies, due to its soft texture, contrasting spots, the smell of the natural made rubber, the distinct light squeak it makes and of course its ability to be chewed!

As for me, a quintessential leather maternity jacket, diaper bag or tote, and maternity or post pregnancy tee are essential in my wardrobe! And please, please, please, do not store away or GIVE away your Secret Fit Belly® maternity jeans. They make for a great postpartum pant…you know I still wear mine! Another easy style tip for moms on the go looking for that cool-factor: opt for a sneaker since they have great support for when you are on your feet with the kiddos all day. Choose a slip on or high-top. I live in Converse and Vans on the weekend, as opposed to my running kicks, since they add a little life and coolness to a denim look.  For my night time routine I keep my skin soft and hydrated (check out our beauty products, featuring high end brands, naturally made skincare and amazingly moisturizing ingredients); I also try my best to get some zzz’s when I can. Who am I kidding? I may never have a good night sleep again, but I’m not complaining!  Being a new mom means more to me. -Olivia

CHIC THIS WEEK: WINTER FLORALS

Chicthisweek

Florals are fresh for fall and add warmth to winter style. Look for abstract flower patterns with a color palette that works for your personality, and the maternity basics you already own. Since florals are a fashion staple, they’ll live on into a new season, which I love. Deep blooms work well at camouflaging and flattering the bump. Another trick to keep in mind when styling a floral is pairing this feminine print with something edgier, like a dark legging or destructed jean. It balances out the sweetness of the print and makes for a cooler maternity look. Happy styling -Olivia

TREND ALERT: STATEMENT SWEATERS

Maternity SweatersMaternity Sweater
Maternity SweaterStatement maternity sweaters are hot for the cool months ahead. Luxe embellishments, chunky cables and fun graphic prints (like lips, stars and hearts) take maternity sweaters to the next level. I love that you can dress up a fun sweater with heels and leather leggings or go completely downtown chic with destructed denim and booties. I always invest in statement pieces every season, since they’re fun to build outfits with, and they become a reflection of my own personality.

I think maternity basics are a necessary foundation in any woman’s pregnancy wardrobe. With that said, I also believe that investing in stand-out pieces make your style more personalized. Like their name suggests, they make a statement! You’ll get mileage out of a great maternity sweater too, since they’re designed with the bump in mind, look great layered AND will look just as cute later, sans baby bump. You know I’m all about reinventing my favorite pieces each season! And, you can too. -Olivia

STACY KEIBLER NEW MOM STYLE

Stacy Keibler New Mom StyleStacy Keibler New Mom StyleStacy Keibler New Mom Style

In the days and months following giving birth, finding your style while getting adjusted to new mom life can be a challenge. I remember those first weeks being 100% focused on my son. That goes with the territory, but now that I’ve gone through it, I can also say that getting back to a personal routine and taking time for yourself goes a long way too.

I still remember our first trip out to lunch after I brought Greyson home. As exhausted as I was, it always made me feel better to spend a few minutes on myself. Finding that balance was hard, but worth it. I was also thankful I had my arsenal of nursing bras and Secret Fit Belly® jeans to transition with me too.

What’s great about the patented Secret Fit Belly® panel is that it grows with you throughout your pregnancy, straight through to after birth. I actually love and still wear my Secret Fit Belly® maternity jeans, because they give me added support when I fold down the panel at my waistline. That comfort is still desired after baby is born. I seriously don’t understand why women stress about getting back into their pre-pregnancy clothes. You really don’t need to!

Just take a look at Stacy Keibler who is a new mom too. I think she looks great rocking some chic transitional maternity clothes while out and about with her daughter Ava Grace a few weeks ago. I love that she’s working classic basics into her new mom wardrobe. The denim maternity jacket, Secret Fit Belly® maternity jean and a chic scarf are cool pieces that give endless outfit options! -Olivia

REBECCA MINKOFF MATERNITY

Rebecca MinkoffRebecca MinkoffRebecca Minkoff

Rebecca Minkoff has been a favorite designer of mine for some time, and I’m excited that we at Destination Maternity have collaborated with her on a new maternity collection, exclusive to A Pea in the Pod and launching this week.

Rebecca is a mother herself and actually worked on this line during her second pregnancy this past year, so she definitely had maternity style on the mind! That’s what is great about this specific collaboration. Rebecca Minkoff is admired by celebrities, but now our customers have the chance to fall in love with true pregnancy fashion. Her globally recognized brand is accessible to you and I love proving that pregnant women do not need to lose their sense of style when they’re expecting!

This maternity collection brings Rebecca’s edgy, yet chic style sensibility to our brand, which I believe fits nicely amongst our other featured designers. Some of my favorite stands outs from the collection are the soft printed maternity pant, modern maternity camisole and fuchsia silk maternity dress. What’s great about these pieces and the complete assortment is how versatile they are. I always say it, I know, but for me being a busy working mom, having that ability to mix and match pieces to create different looks is crucial!  Rebecca’s ready-to-wear options make getting dressed easy (and fun) to do. -Olivia

JESSICA SIMPSON MATERNITY

Jessica Simpson Maternity Collection

Jessica Simpson Maternity Collection

Jessica Simpson is a fashion designing entrepreneur, recording artist, actress, mother and wife. I truly respect her business savvy and her take on motherhood. She is the true meaning of  a working mom. You know she has a singing career, a huge fashion company, a gorgeous husband AND beautiful children. Her posts, pictures and overall family upbringing ensure us she is an excellent mother… with excellent style. Many moms, as well as mommies-to-be, can relate to this notion that women do it all, while managing to look good.

Her Jessica Simpson Maternity Collection always reflects her feminine, hometown girl style. For this upcoming holiday season her line is full of beautiful dresses, watercolor florals, pretty knits and versatile denim styles. There’s also many great transitional pieces in soft shades that can work through to the warmer seasons. Getting mileage out of your maternity wardrobe is key, so I love her take on an every-season palette.

I especially love the cut of the dresses from her maternity collection and the fit of the jeans.  Being a mother herself, she understands a woman’s changing shape. She has faced many public challenges in regards to her figure and she looks amazing, at any size. Unlike many celebrities, Jessica is on the petite side, so her clothing sizes are varied for all body types. We’ve heard from so many expecting women on how fabulous her jeans fit and how flattering all of the pieces, especially the dresses, are. I can attest, since after trying multiple options, I actually chose a lace dress from the Jessica Simpson Spring 2014 collection to wear to my baby shower when I was pregnant.

The full Jessica Simpson Maternity Collection is now available online and in stores. Enjoy! And, happy maternity shopping! -Olivia
