TREND ALERT: BLACK&WHITE

Black & White Maternity Style Black & White Maternity Style Black & White Maternity Style

Pairing black with white is a fashion classic and done in the right way, it’s perfectly posh. For maternity it means you get tons of style mileage out of each of the pieces. But, when worn together, this pairing gives a chic graphic effect that camouflages and dresses up the bump.

Wearing white on top with a black bottom creates a slimming silhouette. Choose the statement blazer of the season, the Maternity Tuxedo Jacket and wear it over a black tee to get the perfect proportion while keeping you looking long and lean. The maternity tuxedo, when buttoned up above your bump, offers a nice shape; worn open, it creates a vertical slimming effect, especially when paired with all black.

Similarly, choosing a white embellished top, like the one shown from our Rebecca Minkoff Maternity line, flatters your bump. The black trim highlights your neckline and is perfect with a graphic printed maternity pant or skirt. Throw a black blazer over the look, even pair with a basic skinny and again, you have a nice long and lean maternity look.

The proportion is key when you are dressing your bump! Always look for maternity pieces since they are designed with your new shape in mind. They are created at the right length or cut-away shape to work with your figure!  Last, as always, accessorizing can be a fun way to hit on the latest trends to complete a look. I am loving the graphic black and white palette happening in the extras right now! A dark nail (like our Butter London Nail Polish), embellished heel or colorblock bag are statement makers on their own, but easily can be worked into your existing wardrobe. Happy styling! -Olivia

TREND ALERT: BUNDLE UP YOUR BUMP

Trend Alert: Warm & CozyTrendAlert_WarmCozy_2-600x862When cold weather hits, it’s time to bundle up your bump! Super soft and comfy cable knit sweaters are hot (quite literally!) this season and perfect for wrapping you and the babe up. Layering your maternity look not only keeps you warm, but allows you to peel off a piece if your temperature rises!  Being pregnant means shifting from hot and cold quickly, so I always recommend wearing lots of layers. A draped stitched sweater can be worn over a seamless cami, plaid shirt over a light-weight sweatshirt, or layer on chunky scarves and hats for a fun look. Stay nice and cozy indoors or take your layered look outside for some fun in the frosty air. -Olivia

WINTER NEWBORN PHOTO IDEAS

Winter Newborn Baby Photos Winter Newborn Baby Photos Winter Newborn Baby Photos Winter Newborn Baby Photos

Many new moms, myself included, have professional photos of their newborns taken to commemorate the occasion and capture the cuteness! I have my son’s newborn photos hung throughout the house, but I wanted to share them with all of you.

Greyson was born on May 28th, which is actually my birthday. However, if you look at these photos, you’d think it was the middle of winter, which is why I wanted to share them. For all of you mamas who are due in the next few months, consider using cozy wraps, blankets and hats for your baby’s props. I chose them for Grey because the colors worked perfectly in our neutral home and I knew I wanted to put them up around the house.

Cozy sweater knit blankets, scarves and hats make for fabulous photo props. I mean, how cute does Grey look all bundled up in the softness? Plus it gives loads of great texture and makes for a nice photo. We had these taken professionally by a wonderful South Jersey photographer, but you can always invest in a nice digital camera yourself. With the right light, additional adult help and lots of patience, you could take your own. Good luck and congrats! – Olivia

Tailored specifically for expecting moms, the five-piece collection consists of statement sweatshirts and jogger pants in a sophisticated palette of gray and black prints. Take it from the women who designed it, “The Pam and Gela High-Low sweatshirt is not only a chic fashion staple, but a must-have item for the season! I’ve been a fan of their signature laid-back, luxury style that always boasts a rock & roll yet boho feel. The successful pair is the original co-founders of Juicy Couture, but actually started in maternity wear: “It’s so fun to return to our beginnings; not many people know that we started our first business with maternity jeans. WHAT TO WEAR/WHERE: PARTY LOOKS

It’s time to talk about what to wear to your holiday office party… family reunion…date night out… everywhere this season! It’s a busy time for most of us mamas and worrying about “what you’ll wear” shouldn’t be an issue, definitely not if you are expecting!

Luckily, there is no better reason than the holidays to add on the glam! A little red maternity dress is totally chic and party appropriate, but so are dressy separates. If you are choosing a dress, I love the idea staying seasonal, or mixing it up with a nice jewel tone like teal. The key to getting a fun colored dress to work with your bump is keeping the silhouette simple. Choosing a clean shape with a chic detail like a ruffle or necklace trim gives you a flattering and modern look that works for your figure. You can’t go wrong with a classic black peep-toe heel or bootie when wearing a bold color.

If you aren’t drawn to a dress for your holiday soiree, then go glam in a maternity skinny and blazer. A classic black skinny Secret Fit Belly® jean paired with an embellished blouse and blazer is super chic. The great thing about these pieces is that with the right accessories, like a d’orsay heel, metallic clutch, or gold cuff, your outfit instantly becomes cocktail ready. PLUS you’ll get style mileage out of these pieces and can dress them down with denim for a more casual look. A tuxedo blazer or maternity lace pant does the same thing. When paired together- POW, completely polished! Or, wear them separately with a tee and jean for a cool casual downtown look.

Lastly, if you’re going black tie this season, an elegant solid colored maternity gown should be your go-to. Again a simple silhouette like an asymmetric column paired with the right accessories is flattering for your bump and remains fashion-forward. Classic accessories like a fabulous cocktail ring, strappy gold heel, red lip or nail will complete this look. Happy styling and hope you all enjoy every holiday affair!- Olivia

HOLIDAY COOKIES

Holiday Cookies Holiday Cookies Holiday Cookies

Now that I’m a wife and mom the holidays are even more fun because I get to share the spirit of the season with my husband and little one! We’ve been busy planning, playing (look for an upcoming post on our trip to The Polar Express), decorating and baking this month! Growing up I took comfort and found so much joy in the family traditions we shared. I’m sure you, like me, have holiday traditions that you remember fondly. My friend Melissa remembers the excitement of opening a special gift for every night of Hanukkah. My husband’s family gave toys to needy children in their community. My twin brother Tom and I decorated the tree every Christmas Eve with our parents. The fun of the holidays is in continuing the traditions we loved from our childhood, but also starting new ones.

Coming from a large Italian-American family, spending time with aunts, uncles, and neighbors was the best part! And of course there was fabulous food that always overflowed in our home during this time.  I looked forward to baking cookies with my mom and aunts, because it gave us a chance to be together, share stories, but also eat! We’d bake all day and all varieties of cookies, from traditional Italian recipes from my grandfather’s family like pizzelles, to classic chocolate chip, lace and spritz (the S cookies!) for a “dash of color.”

The ladies in my family are such good bakers that they’d always share these lovelies with their friends and neighbors. We’d gift out pretty spreads of them on simple dishes wrapped in cellophane, and then tie them up with a bow. It’s such a great gift, especially for those who aren’t bakers, because then they get to enjoy homemade sweets during the holidays! I’m excited to continue this tradition with my own son! At least I’d love for him to see the spectacle of a fun day of holiday baking in his own home. And I also wanted to share this fun and simple gift idea with you and yours. Enjoy and Happy Holidays! xoxo Olivia

Pizzelles:
Yield: 2dozen
Ingredients
3 eggs
3/4 cup white sugar
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
Directions
In a large bowl, beat eggs and sugar until thick. Stir in the melted butter and vanilla. Sift together the flour and baking powder, and blend into the batter until smooth.
Heat the pizzelle iron, and brush with oil. Drop about one tablespoon of batter onto each circle on the iron. You may need to experiment with the amount of batter and baking time depending on the iron. Bake for 20 to 45 seconds, or until steam is no longer coming out of the iron. Carefully remove cookies from the iron. Cool completely before storing in an airtight container.

Italian Wedding Cookies:
Yield: 6 dozen
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups unsalted butter
3/4 cup confectioners’ sugar, plus 1/3 cup, for rolling
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups finely ground blanched almonds
5 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
Directions
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Cream butter in a bowl. Gradually add confectioners’ sugar and salt. Beat until light and fluffy. Add almonds and vanilla. Blend in flour gradually and mix well. Shape into crescents using about 1 teaspoon for each cookie. Place on ungreased cookie sheets, and bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Do not brown. Cool slightly, then roll in the extra confectioners’ sugar.

Lace Cookies:

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup light brown sugar

1/4 cup light corn syrup

pinch of salt

1/4 cup all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled

1/2 cup finely chopped almonds

Directions

Heat oven to 375° F.
In a medium saucepan, heat the butter, sugars, corn syrup, and salt over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until smooth. Remove from heat and mix in the flour and almonds just until incorporated.
Drop level teaspoons of the batter onto parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing them 4 inches apart. Bake until golden brown, 6 to 8 minutes.
Cool on the baking sheets until firm, 8 to 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

WINTER SKIN TIPS FOR PREGNANCY

WinterBeauty_1-608x364 WinterBeauty_2-608x1037 WinterBeauty_3-608x775

The cold winter weather can really take its toll on your beauty routine. As an expectant mama you have specific beauty challenges, like dry and itchy skin, that need special care. Dry skin, cracked heels and elbows, a washed-out complexion and an itchy scalp (all things I dealt with during my pregnancy) can be combatted with the right products.

It’s important to look and feel good during your pregnancy. Your current beauty routine may need some tweaks now that you are expecting. Not only does the texture of your skin change during pregnancy with your hormones working over-time, but that baby bump is growing and stretching your skin every day. I want to talk about some of the latest products that I love for new and expecting mothers. These keep you soft and moisturized during a cold spell, plus many of them are designed with pregnant women in mind. They are gentle on your skin, made without harsh chemicals AND still give great results.

Finding some pampering time during pregnancy and as a new mom is vital. I try to take some “me time” once a week… (Ok- maybe every two weeks.) I spend a Friday night or Saturday morning alone with my beauty routine. For me that can be as simple as a nice bath, exfoliation, face mask or a mini-mani and pedi.  I throw on my soft robe, slippers and spend an hour alone to decompress and take care of myself. When you have kids, it’s obviously hard to find that alone time. Sometimes, that means taking an hour after my son has gone to bed on a Friday night, or letting my husband do Saturday morning breakfast while I do-ME. It’s worth it!

A great place to start is with a nice body scrub. BASQ skincare has a fabulous Citrus Sugar Body Polish that I swear by! It’s great for before and after baby to slough off and smooth dry skin. I use it every other day. A gentle facial cleanser and moisturizer are also key! JUICE BEAUTY, makes a great cleansing milk and super silky moisturizer that are not only effective, but also organic. Another essential mom-to-be product is body oil. BASQ skincare’s calming oils are great for protection against stretching and are packed with natural oils and omegas. Use it after the shower or even at night before bed. I love the lavender oil because it’s calming, which helps with headaches in the evenings.

If you are like me, then a little additional glow always seems to help during the fall and winter. I extend my tan with ST. TROPEZ NATURALS SELF RADIANCE TAN. This self-tanner is 100% natural with vegan ingredients and gives a nice real-looking glow. Lastly, I think it’s important to take care of your hands and feet when you are pregnant, especially in this dryer season. A pumice stone for a little at-home pedicure does the trick. Butter London Hardwear offers a nice topcoat, without harmful chemicals. I hope you can find a little time for yourself to try some of these fabulous beauty products! -Olivia

ROYAL STYLE: UK TO US

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wrapped up their visit to NYC this week. All eyes were on everyone’s favorite royals, but especially Kate to see how she’d dress her regal bump. She met with Hilary Clinton, J.Crew’s Jenna Lyons, then Beyoncé and Jay Z at the Nets Game. They ended their visit to a dinner at the MET.

As always she chose elegant lady-like looks that flattered her figure and her beautiful baby bump. One of my favorite looks was the Seraphine maternity coat she wore during her first day here. She seems to be a minimalist mama when it comes to style, so her suede accessories, booties and quintessential clutch completed this simple yet statement-making look. I love how she always chooses chic and understated accessories!  Can’t wait to see more great looks from the duchess! – Olivia

CHIC THIS WEEK: THE PARKA

Maternity Parka

Winter is here so it’s time to bundle-up that bump! I am loving the maternity parka, especially for pregnancy! It has the best silhouette, plus it’s a hot piece of outerwear for the cold weather. With a great drawstring waist to define your figure, lots of pockets and tons of style, you’ll get mileage out of the parka. Bonus: you can wear it after baby too, which makes it even more of a must-have! Stay warm. -Olivia

TREND ALERT: SHINE ON

TrendAlert-ShimmerShine-1-608x561TrendAlert-ShimmerShine-2-608x403TrendAlert-ShimmerShine-3-608x442

This holiday season touches of shimmer and shine are everywhere from accessories, to home décor, to apparel. A maternity top with some sequins, metallic finish or a decorative neckline can add a little life to a basic jean or legging look. Try this A Pea in the Pod embellished maternity cami, Motherhood necklace trim sweatshirt or long sleeve scoop neck maternity tee.  Then, add some silver and gold accessories for an extra pop. Whether it’s a gold nail lacquer like this one from Butter London, a shimmery heel, or an embellished evening belt, the shiny addition makes an average outfit completely holiday appropriate. -Olivia
