Jill, who you’ll recognize from our Style Solutions for Your First Trimester post and We’re Expecting Too, threw an adorably themed BabyQ for her co-ed baby shower. Co-ed baby showers are becoming a trend and are a great way to include your partner and even more family and friends in the celebration. Read on for her tips for throwing a shower that is perfect for the season and that EVERYONE is sure to enjoy!
Since I planned to have my baby shower in July and outdoors, the BabyQ theme was a perfect fit! Getting to celebrate with Ryan, my husband, who is so excited for our little guy’s impending arrival, was extremely special. Plus, having our closest friends and family together to celebrate was an amazing feeling! We received parenting tips and advice from our loved ones, in addition to many awesome gifts, and we feel more ready than ever for the arrival of our little man!Tips for throwing a great co-ed party:
Keep it Casual: For an outdoor party, having a low key atmosphere is key especially during the summer! A tent to keep cool, plus plenty of outdoor seating so guests can relax in the shade is a must. Also, scrap the traditional baby games and offer more casual games, such as horse shoes, and KanJam. Good music is essential too! A playlist suitable for all ages with a variety of music genres keeps everyone happy!
Go with Simple Backyard Barbeque Food + Decor: Nothing says BBQ more than gingham tables cloths and brisket! Our table linens were a mix of red and blue gingham with a few bandanas thrown in for good measure. We kept to a simple menu of brisket, bbq chicken, and pulled pork and presented appetizers and desserts on galvanized serve wear in keeping with the rustic theme. Sunflower arrangements completed the rustic chic feel of the decor.
Add a Memorable Touch: We displayed photos of my husband and I as children on a vintage wooden screen we found at an antique store and had vintage letter blocks scattered throughout the tables. Guests really enjoyed this touch and we had a blast taking the time to look through and select the photos!

Spring is the perfect time of year for an elegant outdoor baby shower! I love the idea of a garden party complete with beautiful blooms and vintage place settings! An outdoor space can be totally transformed with just a few simple touches like clean linens, abundant flowers and shades of pink. Opt for stationary and place cards with a delicate aesthetic and arrange them throughout the space. Mismatched vintage plates and glasses can be found at your local flea market or thrift store and wooden easels at a craft store. So simple yet so elegant! -Olivia

Is your baby shower approaching? Don’t panic! I’ve got you covered with some totally chic options that are perfect for a spring shower.
Coral is trending right now and I love it for a baby shower, especially if you’re expecting a girl! The pleating on this dress is feminine without being too frilly which works perfectly with a bump. Pair with metallic accessories for a fresh modern finish. And I suggest going with a wedge since it gives you some height without being too high! So many women come to me with the same question…what should I wear to my baby shower? A baby shower should be a celebratory time with family and friends, yet just the thought of a baby shower for so many women sends them into a tizzy. I understand though; I was there too! Since most showers are given during the last trimester, your bump is at its biggest and you may not be feeling so fabulous. If you are like I was with swollen ankles and bouts of Braxton Hicks, then you crave being comfortable AND looking good too. Hello- photo op!
First and foremost, I always suggest wearing a dress that is soft. Either a jersey knit maternity dress or an easy silk maternity shift is a great option for the last trimester. While I’m a big believer in neutrals colors and have a sea of black and greys in my closet, I always think wearing a color makes such a feminine statement. Plus, brighter colors pop in pictures, attracting the attention away from your bigger bump or the other insecurities you may be feeling. If you do go with a black dress, try to choose one that has a detail or textured fabric for some added interest. It’s also important to remember to have the right maternity underwear and outfit foundations, especially when you’ll be spending some time at your shower. Maternity camisoles and the right pregnancy bra can make all the difference. These seamless maternity styles will smooth and support you underneath while keeping you comfortable.
When shopping for your baby shower keep in mind that it’s also an excellent time to stock up on bras, especially if you will be breastfeeding when the baby arrives. Destination Maternity offers a great clip down nursing feature, but can also be worn as a supportive maternity bra. This way you won’t have to make a trip back to the store with a 10 day old baby. (Not going to happen!) Accessories can add some more interest to your look too. Accessorizing is a must to balance out your baby bump, but just remember to stash a pair of flats for when your feet need a rest. Happy dressing ladies and enjoy your day! -Olivia

Meet Jacky: Our Senior Online Marketing Manager! Jacky graciously allowed us to take a peek inside her super-adorable baby shower and told us a little bit about the process:
Tell us about your shower outfit! What did you love most about it?
I’m very petite, so I wanted to wear something fitted that showed off my baby bump. I loved this Laundry by Shelli Segal Dress right away because it was comfortable and stylish, which is very important to me at this point in my pregnancy. To add in a pop of color, I paired the dress with a bright statement necklace. I made sure to wear a maternity shaper underneath, which helped to give me a smooth, sleek look and also helped to relieve some back pain I’ve been experiencing.
Q: How did you decide on your location and theme? Who helped to plan the shower?
The town I live in is very rich in history, so I really wanted to take advantage of that. The shower was held at a charming, old hotel that was built in the 1700’s with beautiful antique features. Since my husband and I are keeping the gender of the baby a secret, the theme was “What Will it Bee?” My family coordinated everything around the theme from the honey jar favors to the bee hive shaped cake. My mother-in-law even baked all the sweet treats that also fit into the theme. It was truly perfect!
Q: What was the most memorable gift you received?
We received a lot of amazing and thoughtful gifts. One of the gifts that stood out to me is from my mother-in-law. She crocheted a replica of an alphabet picture that my husband had in his room as a baby; that was very special to me. Passing on these traditions are very important in building our family together.
