How Working Moms Make It Work: Life After Maternity Leave

Heading back to work after maternity leave is over can be a challenge! For me, the right support system of people is so important. Having a supportive husband and mom that help me balance work, family and play time with my son is the key for me. Try to find someone to help support your schedule, whether it’s your nanny, day care center, neighbors or family members.

I reached out to a few of the most career driven moms I know to offer their best tips to help ease your transition back into the working world after having a baby.003.NIVOn What to WearYou’ll want to breeze into the office after maternity leave feeling comfortable & confident. My advice is to look through your maternity clothes –  all those stylish pieces you bought for work while you were expecting will flatter your figure perfectly now, skimming stylishly over your curves. Wrap dresses like the Seraphine Britney Geo dress are perfect – they’ll highlight your empire waist, drawing attention to your slimmest point. And don’t forget your maternity pants – the Seraphine Cressida white pants pair perfectly with our Jolie Black draped shirt. Plus, that comfy over-the-bump fit which stretched out through your 9 months, will snap back to provide the perfect tummy controlling support while you’re working to regain your regular shape.

On Managing Your Time: Mornings with a little one and trying to get out the door on time can be brutal. My saving grace has been prepping each night for the next work day as much as possible. This limits rushing and allows a little extra mommy and me time with my little girl. When exhaustion from the work week kicks in, I try to steal quick naps while V is sleeping to help get me through. As crazy as it all can be, I keep a picture of V on my desk, making the moments until I get home to her (to do it all over again) a little bit easier.

On Making Time For Fun: Going back to work after maternity leave can definitely be a difficult transition, but I try to remind myself that there is no such thing as getting everything right! I manage two kids, a husband, a career and a household by planning ahead and making time for fun to relieve some stress. It may take some trial and error, but I suggest sticking to a schedule and developing a routine. Remember to ditch the laundry every once in a while for a spontaneous adventure with your kids!

On Maximizing Mommy Time: Kids grow so fast, so it’s important to live in the moment when you are with them. My biggest advice is to make those moments together count. That way, I’m not as sad when I’m away from her at work. My mornings have become much more hectic; being as organized as possible helps! I get all Carlota’s day care items packed the night before and determine what I will wear too. If you are breastfeeding, I would make sure to have some extra milk pumped prior to starting work if possible.  Pumping for me has been stressful, but having extra breast milk in the freezer helps me keep up with her need in daycare as my supply is increasing.

Mommy Must-Have: The Honest CarryAll Satchel

liv liv2The Honest Company_2015-05-11_13-53-53Did you know that we now carry The Honest Carryall Satchel? As a mom who is always on the go, having to switch back and forth between a handbag, work tote and a diaper bag throughout the week was a huge source of frustration for me… that is until I test drove the Satchel last week. With convenient pockets on the outside for easy and quick access to the essentials like my keys, wallet and my son Grey’s snacks, and tons of hidden storage inside, it’s been so much easier to stay organized. Because it looks great, too, and features gold hardware, my go-to accent color, I’ve been using it for work and weekends. I love it so much I plan to use it even after Grey is out of diapers! –Olivia

A Letter to My Mom

Have you read Lisa Erspamer’s book A Letter to My Mom yet? It’s a must read and actually inspired me to write a letter to my own mom that I thought I’d share with all of you!IMG_7257Dear Mom,

Motherhood is often a topic of conversation at the office as you would imagine at a maternity fashion company. We talk about raising children and it always inevitably comes up how having two under two is a challenge. That’s when I love to remind people that I am actually a twin and the doctors didn’t know you were having twins, until, well we showed up.  When people ask, “How did your mother do it?” I always laugh and tell them, “You don’t know my mother.”

I’ve heard you tell people, when they ask the same of you, that you didn’t know any different; an extremely humble take on raising two children without any preparation. You rolled with the punches from the very beginning! Your love of life and confident attitude taught me to enjoy life and live in the moment. Whether it was a bad grade, a heartbreak or a lost opportunity, you were and still are my soft place to fall. You are always optimistic and remind me even today that tomorrow is another day and to always keep forging ahead. The best of friends, a wonderful wife and grandmother, I continue to learn from your example.

I will be all this for my son because you showed me how.

Love, Olivia

If you’d like to meet Lisa, head to our NYC Destination Maternity store tonight from 5-7pm to purchase a signed copy of the book, as well as my favorite picks for Mother’s Day, in case you still have some shopping to do!

Support Baby Buggy + Families in Need

JessicaSimpsonMaternity_Soul_Mates_TeeWe’ve teamed up with Jessica Simpson and Baby Buggy® to launch an exclusive teeshirt for the Jessica Simpson Maternity collection at our Destination Maternity® stores. In celebration of Mothers Day, five dollars of every tee shirt sold, up to $50,000,  will be donated directly to the nonprofit organization Baby Buggy, which provides families in need with essential gear, clothing, and educational services for infants and children up to age 14 across the country.

“Being a mom is the most meaningful life experience I have ever had.  I share a common need with all mothers – to make life as happy and comfortable as possible for my kids,” says Jessica Simpson.  “Baby Buggy is an incredible organization that helps so many mothers fulfill that need.  I am honored to have created this adorable tee to help support Baby Buggy and all of the moms out there who are working hard to be the best they can be for their kids.”

“We are extremely thankful for the continued support of Jessica Simpson and are excited to embark on a new partnership with Destination Maternity to raise even more awareness about our work,” says Baby Buggy Founder Jessica Seinfeld. “The funds raised will greatly help our organization’s efforts to support parents across the country as they work to raise their families in a safe and healthy environment.”

The super soft, heather grey tee shirt is adorable and is currently available online and in our Destination Maternity and Motherhood Maternity stores. If you purchase the tee we encourage you to help raise even more awareness for Baby Buggy and its network of moms and their families nationwide by sharing across social media using the hashtag #JSxBabyBuggy. -Olivia

Celebrating the Launch of Rachel Zoe Collection for A Pea in the Pod

While shopping, guests enjoyed macarons from Dana’s Bakery personalized with our hashtag #RachelZoexAPIP in flavors like chocolate molten and jelly doughnut- YUM! Décor included all white floral arrangements with peeled back roses and hydrangeas (Rachel’s favorites).

I had the pleasure of hosting two of the events in sunny Aventura and Coral Gables, Florida.   It was so much fun to meet with clients and introduce them to the collection!  I was able to advise on the best ways to style the bump while helping the expecting moms-to-be shop for their maternity essentials and wardrobe.Rachel_Zoe_Event_RecapBottom_608x1100Los Angeles-based blogger Leanne Barlow hosted the event in Beverly Hills and looked GORGEOUS in the Rachel Zoe Printed Caftan Maternity Dress.
