NURSERY DECOR: NAUTICAL

Nurseries To Crave Nurseries To Crave Nurseries To Crave

A friend of mine just decorated her little boy’s nursery in an adorable nautical theme! She loves the beach and ocean, so she brought those earth and water tones into the room where she can spend time with her little one. I love the results and the theme! Nautical is a trend in interior and nursery design, in particular, that never gets old. It’s continually being updated with new elements.

If you are thinking about trying this theme, remember to include lots of white to keep the room looking fresh and airy. Navy is a great neutral too; plus, it will transition well into a big kid’s room. Stripes, whales, anchors and sail boats make for perfect touches for this motif, whether on a pillow, wall mural or mobile. AND… for the final finisher, try choosing an accent color of light blue, yellow or even green for some fun and freshness. Baby’s layette and clothing will also go perfectly with this color palette, so it all works together. Happy decorating! -Olivia

NURSING BRA CHECKLIST

Nursing Bra Checklist Nursing Bra Checklist Nursing Bra Checklist

Looking for the perfect nursing bra and not sure where to start? Well, I have just the checklist for you! As a breastfeeding mother myself and former nursing bra designer, I’m going to give you the breakdown on the different types of nursing bras, describing whether or not they will work specifically for you. I also have a few recommendations of my own, so read on for all the juicy deets!

First, a few things to keep in mind as you go through your pregnancy…. OBVIOUSLY, your breasts may continue to grow and then again once you begin breastfeeding. For that reason, I recommend shopping for new bras each trimester before baby, then again after. Seriously, please do not try and make-do with a bulging bra for 9 months for the sake of your pocketbook, ESPECIALLY when Destination Maternity has great offers like BUY 3 GET ONE FREE on all bras right now.

When it comes to nursing it is all about the fit AND the clip down nursing feature. The bra style is your preference (demi, full coverage, seamless) but the fit is designed for your growing bust, and that’s on us. The fancy clip down feature offers easy single handed nursing access and has a modesty panel underneath. So, rather than pulling down your whole bra strap and cup, our bras clip down from the cup and don’t leave you completely exposed.

Now on to the basic styles; since not all nursing bras are made alike, please take note of their differences.

-Sleep: This super soft, unlined bra usually comes in a wrap style. It offers light support at night (although many women choose to wear this during the day too) and has an easy pull over nursing feature. This type is perfect for night time feedings in the dark, a must-have starting in the 1st trimester for light bed time support.

-Sports: Great for working out, since it is a supportive bra with light cups and straps that don’t dig in.

-Full Coverage: These bras come in wireless and underwire, but all offer more coverage for a fuller cup size. This style is also available in a molded cup, which offers smoothing support.

-Seamless: My favorite! Made in super supportive and seamless fabric, this style is lightly lined and extremely comfortable. It’s a great everyday or night time bra. Also, it is smart to stock up on these early in the 1st or 2nd trimester since they are extremely forgiving and soft on sensitive skin.

-Convertible: This bra is just like its non-nursing counterpart, the demi bra, plus it is crafted with a great convertible strap feature… a must have for wedding season!

-Wireless: I was a wireless girl before I got preggers and went with this wire-free style throughout trimesters 1 through 4. Some women are so sensitive that prior wire lovers go wireless during pregnancy and while nursing. This style is also available in a molded cup.

-Demi: No need for full-coverage? Go with a demi nursing bra. Available in different fabrics and colors, the demi is a customer favorite and makes for a great everyday bra.

Keep in mind the rule of 4! Always have 4 bras on hand at any time: one to wear, one to wash, and two at-the-ready. I hope you find the perfect nursing bras for you! -Olivia

TREND ALERT: SPORT STYLE

TrendAlert-ActiveWear_1-608x560 TrendAlert-ActiveWear_2-608x500 TrendAlert-ActiveWear_3-608x762

Active apparel is a big trend right now that is inspiring both ready-to-wear and designer style alike.  In maternity, the trend is giving a fresh take to work-out wear with comfort crafted right in. Active separates are designed in supportive and soft fabrics that are not only perfect for the gym, but cool enough for an everyday maternity look.

Whether you are a pilates guru, runner or spinning lover, layering maternity tanks, jackets, leggings and yoga pants is a maternity must. I always had a few black yoga pants in different leg shapes in my closet when I was pregnant; I would layer up with an array of tops and sweatshirts. As a yoga lover, I wish we carried our Beyond the Bump by Beyond Yoga line when I was pregnant. Available on-line and in-stores at Destination Maternity and A Pea in the Pod, this yoga collection is crafted from great fabrics and made in a multitude of colors that can be worn before and after baby.

I also suggest adding in pops of brightness to your maternity fitness wardrobe too; it makes working out more fun when you look good, thus feel good. In our Motherhood Maternity collection, the soft neon palette is totally of-the-moment! AND remember to start with the right foundations. A seamless maternity sports bra and panty offer added support and comfort. Complete your sporty look with a pair of Nike trainers and you are working out in style. -Olivia

NURSING TOPS YOU NEED

Nursing Tops You Need Nursing Tops You Need Nursing Tops You Need

After I brought my son home from the hospital, there were so many things I wasn’t prepared for. I was a first time new mom experiencing pure joy mixed with a flood of emotions and sleepless nights. And really, you can’t truly prepare or predict how having a baby will change you. But, having girlfriends and family to help prepare you for the what-ifs, as well as having your arsenal of baby products and apparel on-the-ready, is obviously a great place to start.

If you choose to breastfeed, as I did, I think it’s also important to do some research beforehand. While the web is a great place and there are so many informative books to choose, I went right to my local online La Leche League. Knowing information can help ease your mind, although again, nothing prepares you like being thrown into the fire… with a hungry newborn! Nursing bras, pads and a great lanolin cream for soreness are no-brainers. I also found that having my favorite nursing tops in multiples was clutch!

I thought I’d spend some time talking about the various nursing top styles that I love, so you can also get an idea of what may work for you. First and foremost, you need to be comfortable while nursing. Choose soft, stretchy styles. Also look for tops that offer some modesty with a clip down feature or a secret panel as a second layer designed right into the top. The nursing tops our team designs here at Destination Maternity are specifically crafted with these special features; they are also cut in flattering silhouettes that are forgiving over your new mom midsection.

Wearing a second layer is also a nice option when you are nursing on the go. I wore a chic knit cardigan over our clip down nursing camisole, making pumping at work easier. I always suggest stocking up on the clip-down camisole in a few colors to have, ready to go. So many of my girlfriends and clients love these because the clips easily unlock with one hand, freeing the other up for baby. If you’ve nursed before, I know you GET IT! Being able to work your wardrobe one-handed is important.

It’s was also so important to me to be able to maintain a chic look while nursing. I mean, looking cute is a must, right? That’s why I love a double drape nursing top or lightweight poncho. Both silhouettes are pretty sophisticated and can be paired with a legging or jean for a completely polished look. Remember, you want your own personal style to shine through. That’s what’s great about each of these pieces. You can incorporate them into your own wardrobe and look like the fabulous new mom that you are! Enjoy your babes -Olivia

1st TRIMESTER MUST-HAVES

First Trimester Maternity Must Haves First Trimester Maternity Must Haves First Trimester Maternity Must Haves First Trimester Maternity Must Haves

There have been a lot of new pregnancy announcements the past few weeks: Ashley Simpson, Hilaria Baldwin, Tamara Mowry-Housley and Zooey Deschanel to name a few celebrities. AND also just as exciting, a bunch of my girlfriends came out with the big news too! The texts and emails are flying in from my girls, “What do I need”? “Where do I start?” “My boobs are sooooo big…I need new bras _ stat!”  So, in honor of the latest Hollywood pregnant fashionistas, as well as the lovely ladies in my life who are still in their 1st trimesters or just got through those first 12 weeks of baby bump bliss, I thought I’d talk 1st trimester MUST-HAVES.

Lucky for me, I got to comprise this list with help from style maven and fellow blogger Brooke from Somewhere, Lately. Brooke and her friend Meggan came together to create their awesome blog that documents their love of fashion, beauty and all things cool! It’s one of my favorite destinations for outfit and beauty inspiration. Brooke’s got the cool-girl style thing down! She has an amazing eye and always looks effortlessly chic. She’s a big fan of A Pea in the Pod Maternity and has been choosing pieces from the fall line throughout her whole pregnancy; fortunately I had the chance to ask her what some of her favorite pieces are. She’s sported Paige and DL1961 maternity jeans and tops from our namesake line, just to name a few!

To begin, let’s discuss how those first few weeks are full of emotions, excitement, expanding breasts and bumps! For many women it is also a time where you may not want to share your big news yet. Many women wait that first trimester, limiting the big news to just family and very close friends. So in the beginning as your body is just getting adjusted to pregnancy, you are trying to look and feel your best AND maybe conceal your changing figure.

Now’s a good time to start investing in versatile side-ruched tees, plus easy everyday maternity leggings- Brooke agrees! These are two essentials that will take you through your entire pregnancy, so I suggest adding them to your arsenal early on. I also hate to see women struggling to fit into their pre-pregnancy jeans. There is nothing more uncomfortable than trying to bulge your new waistline into non-stretchy denim. The beauty of the Secret Fit Belly® panel is that it’s invisible. I recommend transitioning into at least one or two new pairs while your pregnancy news is fresh. The fabrics and materials that the designers choose have awesome stretch and recovery so they will fit well throughout those 9 months. The panel is easily covered with your top, so if you aren’t ready to let the secret out, there is no need to worry. Brooke loves the designer ones, but there are so many choices from both Motherhood Maternity and A Pea in the Pod.

Keeping comfortable is key! So is having a wardrobe that can transition with you through the trimesters. Maternity yoga pants are another great idea to keep you looking cute and comfortable. For bloggers like Brooke, this cosiness is necessary, since sitting down for long periods of time can be so uncomfortable, especially when expecting! A luxe maternity sweater is another good choice that is soft, has an easy fit, can grow with you and is super chic in any wardrobe. Together, this look works year round.

Maternity bras are critical additions. Your bust-line may continue to grow and perhaps will become sensitive, so switching to super soft seamless styles and sleep bras in the beginning can be a life saver. AGAIN comfort is KEY!

Brooke and I both agree on these last 3 important pieces. Keeping hydrated by drinking lots of H2O is extremely vital for you and baby. Throw a Tummy Tube in your wardrobe to help smooth out your waistline, if you aren’t wearing the Secret Fit Belly® panel. It’s great for added bump support too. And lastly, keep cozy in comfy maternity maternity pajamas. You may feel tired during that first trimester due to the changes that your bodies (and hormones) are creating! So try to relax, put your feet up, and feel the best you can while looking amazing too.

Congrats to my girls and to anyone who is newly pregnant! xoxo- Olivia

GET THE LOOK: KEIRA KNIGHTLEY

GET_THE_LOOK-KeiraKnightly_1-608x272 GET_THE_LOOK-KeiraKnightly_2-608x945 GET_THE_LOOK-KeiraKnightly_3-608x1055

Who doesn’t love Keira Knightley and her always evolutionary style? From ultra-feminine to awesomely androgynous… her wardrobe is always chic.  She recently announced her pregnancy, so I took a look back at some of my favorite fashions that she’s worn this past year, including her most recent red carpet choice at the 2015 Golden Globes.

I am predicting we’ll see her continue a lady-like look with tons of waistline interest and A-Line silhouettes. Both are especially flattering with a bump! Cinching with a tie or belt at the empire line above your bump can really slim at the smallest part on your torso. A-Line and flared shapes on skirts and babydoll dresses are also perfect silhouettes to balance out a growing bump.

Keira sticks to classic neutral colors like black, white and nudes; then she adds in shots of soft colors. She chooses cuts that work for her with interesting details like ruffles, lace and embroidery to highlight her neck or hemline. Her style secret seems to be choosing classic, yet modern looks, which I love because it works so well for her. I think we’ll see her continue to wear lots of flare and A-Line shapes, belted dresses and soft details as she goes further along in her pregnancy. Take a cue from Keira and try femme-fashion while you’re expecting. – Olivia

Q+A WITH LOVEJOOKIM

Love Joo Kim Love Joo Kim

Fashion blogger, foodie and mom-to-be Joo Kim of lovejookim.com has been in my fashion line-up of style influencers for some time. I love her casual downtown vibe and could totally live in her closet. She is a serious foodie too, so it’s just as much fun following her food travels as well as her outfits!

Now that she’s expecting, she’s been working pieces from A Pea in the Pod, Motherhood Maternity and Jessica Simpson Maternity into her wardrobe. The results are amazing! Joo is a huge fan of our Secret Fit Belly® jeans; she chose our DL1961 maternity jeans to style in her 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Now that she’s nearing the end of her pregnancy, I had the chance to ask her a few questions about how she’s been maintaining her effortless look. -Olivia

O Myers: What are some of your favorite maternity essentials now that you are in your 3rd trimester?

J Kim: My favorite maternity essential is a good pair of jeans and a comfy cardigan; they are literally my everyday go-to pieces. Accessories are really important during this pregnancy, since my outfits are more basic, and then I accessorize to give my outfit that little oomph it needs!

O Myers: How did you keep your sense of style throughout your pregnancy?

J Kim: I think the important thing is to try wearing things you would normally wear when you’re not pregnant. I stuck to a lot of basic dresses and paired them with chunky scarves and booties – accessorize your look and get more mileage out of your outfit!

O Myers: How has your beauty routine changed now that you are expecting?

J Kim: It’s pretty much the same. I’ve added a couple more steps like applying my belly cream and oils after my face routine. I don’t do face packs anymore, just to be safe. I would say the most important thing I do is try to hydrate myself a lot more by remembering to drink water.

O Myers: Since wearing your Secret Fit Belly® jeans, tell us why you love the fit and if you plan on wearing them later after baby.

J Kim: I absolutely loooove the fit. Secret Fit Belly® jeans are amazing; I never knew there was such a thing for pregnant women – serious lifesaver. Especially during the colder months, a good pair of jeans is so important! The color and wash of the jeans are so chic that I probably will continue to wear them after my pregnancy for as long as I can.

STYLISH WINTER MATERNITY STAPLES

Winter Maternity Staples Every Expecting Modern Mom Should Have

Winter Maternity Staples Every Expecting Modern Mom Should Have

Winter Maternity Staples Every Expecting Modern Mom Should Have

We’ve seen our first snowfall this week here in the tri-state area (North East!) One of the few good things that come with a winter chill is that you need a new cold weather wardrobe! That means layers are a must. But… it shouldn’t mean that your style has to suffer when you’re expecting. The trick to maternity dressing, in general, is to start with a great any-season foundation and add on signature pieces that work for the weather, plus that speak to your style. I’ve put together some chic maternity staples that will keep you warm and looking your best. PLUS, many of the pieces can easily transition into the spring, so you’ll get tons of maternity style mileage from your wardrobe.

Start with a Secret Fit Belly® denim legging. It’s versatile and comfortable, especially with the smoothing support of the stretchy panel over your bump. The dark wash can be styled up or down for a more casual look. A classic shirt, designed just for your growing shape, is another maternity essential that can be easily layered for the winter and then restyled into spring. Add a cashmere maternity poncho like this Isabella Oliver Maternity one for a chic layered look that’s perfect for the season.

Accessorizing is a must! It’s a great way to complete your look by showcasing your own personal touch. A scarf and a warm wool hat add practical fashion. I’m also loving cross- body bags right now and dark nail lacquer like Butter’s LaMoss; this shade is completely of-the-moment, considering a deep MARSALA red is the pantone color of the year!

For a fresh fun touch add in some metallic or sparkle. A shiny layering tee or rose gold watch (loving this Marc Jacobs version) can easily freshen up a winter look, but also transition into spring. These next versatile pieces round out my list for stylish winter must-haves for mamas: a great chunky cardi and an all-weather parka!

Happy Styling -Olivia

NEW THINGS TO COME

NewYears2015_Resolutions_1-608x189 NewYears2015_Resolutions_2-608x824 NewYears2015_Resolutions_3-608x877 NewYears2015_Resolutions_4-608x983

I’ve taken some time off from work and blogging to spend the holidays with my family, but now I’m back in the swing of social media and maternity styling! Getting started off in the New Year is always exciting; it’s also a time of personal reflection, as I’m sure it is for so many of you.

In just 365 days so much has happened in my life, and really when I think back to even a few years ago, things have changed drastically. All the changes, even the challenges, have been for the better. All of you new and expecting moms, I am sure you understand that feeling! It seems like just yesterday that I got married, and then not before long, I was pregnant with my son. Then, soon after that I left my design position here at Destination Maternity to focus solely on social media, marketing and blogging. So basically, there were three huge life changes in quite a short amount of time.

Being a multi-tasking mother didn’t come naturally, but sharing the passion for my work, enjoying my family, and watching my baby grow into a toddler has. The rest has been a huge learning curve and I’m lucky to have friends, family, colleagues and fellow bloggers to share my journey with. I expected seamless transitions with each endeavor, but quickly learned you can’t be or do everything, and to think you can is just plain silly. So, relinquishing that notion that everything should feel and come easy, especially when you are juggling so much, was my biggest take-away of 2014. It actually helped lift a weight off my shoulders and made me feel OKAY about asking and accepting help from others.

I’m looking forward to more “firsts” this year. I have new travel plans with my husband, new styling sessions on the horizon and a brand new office in a different state at our corporate headquarters to look forward to! Oh… and a 2nd birthday to start planning for my little boy! As an expecting or new mom, I hope that you will be gentle with yourself in 2015. Enjoy your little ones and let me know if there are any special topics you’d like me cover in the coming months!

Warm wishes for a happy and healthy year to all of you and your families! xoxo-Olivia

CELEBRITY MATERNITY STYLE OF 2014

2014 was an exciting year for expecting celebrities! Baby bumps in Hollywood were everywhere (fabulously dressed ones, may I just add!) From glamorous designer maternity gowns to cool and casual pregnancy fashion, I’m giving you a round-up of my favorite celebrity looks, including pieces from Destination Maternity!

I am in love with this monochromatic look that Vanessa Lachey wore on the December cover of Fit Pregnancy Magazine, featured in our Joes Jeans. Vanessa also rocked AG Jeans for A Pea in the Pod, creating a timeless look with a simple sweater and booties. She proved that denim is a maternity must-have! (CREDIT: Fit Pregnancy)

All eyes have been on The Duchess of Cambridge, (Kate Middleton), and her royal pregnancy style since she announced she is expecting her second child earlier this year. My favorite look of hers has been the Seraphine coat she wore during her visit to NYC. Kate’s ladylike style with minimalist accessories is always on point. (CREDIT: ok.co.uk.com)

Blake Lively’s maternity style has been the one to watch! She makes pregnancy look glamorous even in a cape and jeans. Love it! The soft yellow Gucci gown Blake wore to a charity event this fall was fabulous too! She is such a natural beauty and mama-to-be. (CREDIT: dailymail.co.uk.com & eonline)

Kourtney Kardashian’s bi-coastal style never disappoints. She makes a casual dress, plus the right accessories look polished by pairing her look with a cool-girl trench coat. (CREDIT: dailymail.co.uk)

Alicia Keys is part rocker-chic, part glam-mom. Seen out and about in AG camo-skinnies, a white shirt and a ridiculously cool hat, she stays true to her style even throughout pregnancy.

Kerry Washington creates perfect pregnancy looks. She was radiant in a custom Balenciaga gown at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards this year. The beautiful petals flattered her bump and the ivory color was a great choice for her glowing complexion. Kerry followed up the Golden Globes with a Jason Wu lilac gown for the 2014 Oscars.  Another beautiful color for her and with the soft draping, it gave her an ethereal look that was maternity gold. (CREDIT: mtv.com & dailymail.co.uk.com)

Kelly Rowland showed off her baby bump at the 2014 VMAs in a soft pink sequined gown. The feminine color, romantic up-do and dramatic jewels put her in the best dressed list for the year. Kelly also had some fun weekend looks during her pregnancy with Titan. The maternity boyfriend jeans from A Pea in the Pod, tank top and bandana showed off her fashionably fun R&B side. (CREDIT: justjared.com)

I loved watching Stacy Keibler style her beautiful bump in pieces from our A Pea in the Pod Collection. Here she chose a fabulous tangerine Rachel Pally maternity dress and Isabella Oliver maternity jacket, proving you can wear color when you are pregnant!

Ciara was stunning at the 2014 Grammy Awards in Emilio Pucci. The metallic gold gown hugged her bump, was an amazing shade for her, and her easy LOB hairstyle was perfection. (CREDIT: popsugar.com)

Hayden Panettiere really surprised me with her choice for the 2014 Emmy Awards, but in a really good way! The petite star chose a glamorous sequined dress with a plunging neckline from Lorena Sarbu. The daring silhouette and shimmer totally worked for her, accentuating her bump… this was a total win in my book! (CREDIT: glamour.com)

The Valentino gown Olivia Wilde wore to the 2014 Oscar Awards was one of my favorites of the year. I love an elegant black gown. The white peekaboo back was a chic surprise too! (CREDIT: eonline)

These are my picks for the best dressed mamas of the year. Who’s yours? Let us know!- Olivia
