How Working Moms Make It Work: Life After Maternity Leave

Heading back to work after maternity leave is over can be a challenge! For me, the right support system of people is so important. Having a supportive husband and mom that help me balance work, family and play time with my son is the key for me. Try to find someone to help support your schedule, whether it’s your nanny, day care center, neighbors or family members.

I reached out to a few of the most career driven moms I know to offer their best tips to help ease your transition back into the working world after having a baby.003.NIV

On What to WearYou’ll want to breeze into the office after maternity leave feeling comfortable & confident. My advice is to look through your maternity clothes –  all those stylish pieces you bought for work while you were expecting will flatter your figure perfectly now, skimming stylishly over your curves. Wrap dresses like the Seraphine Britney Geo dress are perfect – they’ll highlight your empire waist, drawing attention to your slimmest point. And don’t forget your maternity pants – the Seraphine Cressida white pants pair perfectly with our Jolie Black draped shirt. Plus, that comfy over-the-bump fit which stretched out through your 9 months, will snap back to provide the perfect tummy controlling support while you’re working to regain your regular shape.

On Managing Your Time: Mornings with a little one and trying to get out the door on time can be brutal. My saving grace has been prepping each night for the next work day as much as possible. This limits rushing and allows a little extra mommy and me time with my little girl. When exhaustion from the work week kicks in, I try to steal quick naps while V is sleeping to help get me through. As crazy as it all can be, I keep a picture of V on my desk, making the moments until I get home to her (to do it all over again) a little bit easier.

On Making Time For Fun: Going back to work after maternity leave can definitely be a difficult transition, but I try to remind myself that there is no such thing as getting everything right! I manage two kids, a husband, a career and a household by planning ahead and making time for fun to relieve some stress. It may take some trial and error, but I suggest sticking to a schedule and developing a routine. Remember to ditch the laundry every once in a while for a spontaneous adventure with your kids!

On Maximizing Mommy Time: Kids grow so fast, so it’s important to live in the moment when you are with them. My biggest advice is to make those moments together count. That way, I’m not as sad when I’m away from her at work. My mornings have become much more hectic; being as organized as possible helps! I get all Carlota’s day care items packed the night before and determine what I will wear too. If you are breastfeeding, I would make sure to have some extra milk pumped prior to starting work if possible.  Pumping for me has been stressful, but having extra breast milk in the freezer helps me keep up with her need in daycare as my supply is increasing.

    Hi Olivia,
This was so insightful and true- thank you! I just returned in March and it’s been a balancing act. Another thing that has helped me is being very clear with my boss about expectations regarding time in the office. Before I had the baby, I didn’t even think about working 11 or 12 hours a day but now I have a baby, and a nanny, to get home to, I can’t work much more than 8hrs/day. Prior to my first day back, in an email (so I had her agreement in writing), I told her that I would need to leave by a very specific time each day to allow my nanny to leave at a reasonable time. Being as transparent about “face time” expectations with your boss as possible is key to making the transition seamless and keeping any extra stress or guilt (whether the guilt is self-induced about enough time in the office or brought on by your boss) at bay.

Also- Destination Maternity’s new “Bounce Back” post-partum line has been a life-saver. My maternity pants, after a few months, just accentuated the belly I had leftover and the “Bounce Back” pants are great for work (the skinny black ones or the jeans) and great for my confidence! They smoothed all of my bumps and made me feel thin and proud of how much weight I had lost without being uncomfortable or constrictive. The low price point is also great too! I’m a HUGE fan.

    Thank you!
