The Dos + Don’ts of Fall Maternity Style

In interviews and style sessions I often get asked about the big no-nos when it comes to maternity dressing. I am a big believer that rules are made to be broken so I rarely give hard and fast ones. I do, however, think that some trends are just MADE for maternity and some non-maternity favorites may need to hit the road once a bump is on board. Read on for some fall styling tips and trends you may want to avoid.PP_Fall15_15-2272_RT-flt_72I’ve already mentioned the poncho as a hot maternity trend in a recent post and for good reason; it’s a big fashion statement now! But buyers beware: non maternity ponchos that are too short and chunky are definitely not a good look. I say this trend is a DO, but opt for one that is specifically designed with a bump in mind like this Ella Moss version.
PP_Fall15_21-2764_RT-flt_72Another DO: Prints please! Prints and patterns can be a bump’s best friend.
PP_Fall15_20-2698_RT-flt_72When in doubt, DO accessorize, but DON’T go overboard with too many accessories. As Coco Chanel once said, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory.” I think the same holds true for a mom-to-be.PP_Fall15_16-2310_RT-flt_72DON’T only wear neutral colors! The key to wearing color is to know what shades work for you. Reds and wines are keys for fall. Know what colors look best for you and incorporate them into your maternity wardrobe.PP_Fall15_23-3090_RT-flt_72DON’T opt for only basic maternity tunics and leggings. I get it… leggings are a mama’s best friend, and since they are actually all over the runways right now, they are a major DO. But switch them up; try a denimleather or textured legging in addition to your basic versions to keep them fresh. And dress up a legging look with sleek booties, a plaid shirt or a swingy tee for an anything-but-basic look. –Olivia

  1. I love the wine dress for the dos and donts of fall. Where do I find it?
