Every day my two year old is learning something and it’s so much fun to be along for these new discoveries and milestones! In addition to potty training, we are in the process of teaching Grey good manners. So far, our toddling pupil has mastered introducing himself, and saying “hello,” “goodbye,” “please” and “thank you!” However, we’re struggling with table etiquette during mealtime.Things usually start out well but ten minutes into the meal Grey’s small attention-span and appetite make him restless. We tried to appease him by giving him his choice of fruits and veggies to keep him at the table longer… and give mom and dad a few more minutes to eat. As of late, however, food, along with full cups of juice, ends up thrown all over the floor!
When this happens, we pause and remind him food is for eating and not to be thrown on the floor. We also make it a point to compliment him when he uses his spoon properly or cleans himself up with a napkin. Changing up his late afternoon snacks to include lighter options and moving him to a booster seat instead of the highchair have also helped.
Do you have any tips for dealing with your toddler’s meltdowns during mealtime? –Olivia
