HERE’S TO YOU NATIONAL BREASTFEEDING MONTH

This past weekend marked the 6-month point of providing only breastmilk to my little Roni girl, or as I call her my macRONI [DNA confirmed I am 78% of Italian descent so…] I am so proud of myself. It has not been easy, because I am down to making 1 bag of milk a day, but I had enough freezer stash to get me this far. How will I celebrate, you ask? By cutting my remaining milk with formula.

No judgements, but baby girl has to eat, and I just don’t make it like I used to. I have previously stated I will pump until I pump air, which remains true, but supplementing is how I plan to stretch my milk. This is #mymomtruth today. I didn’t mean for my journey to wind down as National Breastfeeding Month also is, but I also can’t help if my timing is impeccable.

Although I am deeply saddened by knowing there will only be a few months left of nursing and pumping, I also am happy to start regaining some alone time. [Editor’s Note: There is no alone time. Alone time ended in 2016, but for the sake of my sanity, let’s allow me to believe I will be able to have some time for myself without an infant or a machine attached to me.] I am also excited that as the days get closer to my breakup with breastfeeding, I can start to drink my favorite licorice mint tea again. If you don’t know, mint is said to lower milk production and help reduce your supply. Maybe one of these weeks I’ll have Ray, Ray make a recipe for some teas!

YOUR MONTHLY CRAVING: MAMA’S GOTTA EAT

Welcome to the first edition of YOUR MONTHLY CRAVING.

Get ready for some easy, healthy and delicious recipes – OH, and we’re bringing back Mocktail Mondays. I’m EXCITED for you to get to meet another copywriter who works for Motherhood®: Ray Peraino.

Head’s up – he’s a wordy one! Over to you Ray:

“I’m a copywriter with a background in fine dining who’s afflicted with an insatiable sense of curiosity. I’m impulsive and excitable like a newly rescued Pitbull pup. I carry around a comically small notebook full of half-baked ideas, quotes, recipes I’ll never make and ridiculous doodles.There’s a lot of similarities between the marketing world and the professional kitchen — the pressure to create, the stress, the camaraderie, the indescribable urge to cater to others. Serving creativity on a fork or on a page both take a lot of thought, consideration, and time — most of which goes unseen or unappreciated, but I blissfully carry on in service, because, well, it’s what I love.”

It was through Ray that we met his friend Lauren, one of the “real moms” from our video series. Lauren shared about being a new mom and how it made her realize that taking care of herself first is vital in order to take care of others.

Lauren said, “Being a working mother and breastfeeding and pumping and juggling everything is very difficult. For my first pregnancy with Maui, nursing with him, I lost a lot of weight. I was not taking care of myself because you’re just trying to provide and you kind of forget about yourself. With the new baby, I’m going to really take care of myself and my son, and really focus on our health and making sure we’re all good.”

Ray recently called Lauren to see how her second pregnancy is going. He asked about how she is now taking care of herself after experiencing that difficulty with her first son.  She used to buy bulk bags of granola to pick on all day because she was so exhausted. But this time around, she gets low-glycemic fruits and adds protein powder with different nut milks in a blender. She told him it changed her energy, which is good since as an optician she is on her feet all day!

In honor of Lauren, doing double-duty as a mom and a mama-in-the-making, Ray has provided us with a smoothie bowl [he’s so hip] topped with granola, because Lauren didn’t ditch the granola, she just knows that mama’s gotta eat more!  Make it; tag it; I want to see it. Take it away Ray Ray! – Daina

Berry Smoothie Bowl with Protein & Granola

This simple recipe was inspired by Lauren’s go-to pregnancy breakfast. I jazzed it up a bit to pack in a few extra nutritional benefits. Oats and oat milk are a great source or iron which is a must to increase milk supply in nursing mothers. The toasted walnuts on top add some omega-3 ALA and the berries are loaded with antioxidants, low in sugar and high in fiber. The Omega-3s are a great source of healthy fats and have been associated with many benefits for baby like brain health and development.

Serves: 4-5

Ingredients

2-3 overflowing cups of mixed frozen berries

A few ice-cubes

Some splashes of Oat Milk (Sub almond or coconut milk). Remember, this is going to be something you’re going to be eating with a spoon, not pulling through a straw, so you want it to be thick- be conservative with the milk here. Add it a splash at a time to get things moving.

2 tablespoons almond butter

1 cup of organic, plain instant oats/oatmeal (These blend better, you don’t have to cook them before hand, they’re easier to digest than whole rolled oats and they add fiber to your smoothie without a ton of calories.)

1 Fistful of spinach (You won’t even taste it, scout’s honor.)

1 Serving of the plant-based protein powder of your choice (I highly recommend vanilla here.)

Instructions

  • Place everything in your blender, mixing until smooth, adding oat milk as needed.
  • Pour into bowls, top with your favorite organic granola and some toasted walnuts.

SAVORY AND SWEET MDW SNACKS

Memorial Day: eat, drink and be pregnant...

We took some simple recipes from our friends at Fit Pregnancy and Parents Magazine. Mini-meals made with nutritious (and tasty) foods can help fight queasy tummy, ease heartburn and minimize indigestion. Whip up and enjoy these little pregnancy pick-ons for that backyard BBQ, summer kick-off party, or even just a relaxing day at home.

Let’s start with something savory: Meze Platter with Roasted Pepper Dip

Servings: 4 Prep 5 mins Cook 15 mins Start to Finish 20 mins

Ingredients
For dip:
• 3 roasted or grilled red peppers, seeded and peeled
• 1/2 cup canned white beans, rinsed and drained
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 1 small clove garlic, minced
• Salt to taste

For meze platter:
• 2 6-inch pita breads (3 ounces each)
• Cooking spray
• 20 cherry tomatoes
• 16 kalamata olives
• 1/2 English cucumber (about 1/2 pound), peeled and cut into thin spears

Make It
1.Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Place dip ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth. Put in a covered, airtight container and refrigerate until needed. (Dip will keep for 3 days, refrigerated.)
2.Cut pita into triangles, place triangles on a cookie sheet in a single layer and mist with cooking spray. Bake until toasted and crisp, about 15 minutes.
3.To assemble each meze platter: Add 1/4 cup dip to a small bowl; place on a plate; arrange one-fourth of toasted pita triangles alongside 5 cherry tomatoes, 4 olives and 2 to 3 cucumber spears.

And finish with something sweet: Yogurt Covered Fruit

Parents suggests strawberries, but we think adding in blueberries and bananas would make for that Red, White and Blue kick the holiday calls for! (They even gave the nutrition facts in case you’re into knowing…)

Ingredients and Directions:
Dip 1 lb. strawberries into one 5-oz. container Greek yogurt. Place berries on a wax-paper lined baking sheet; freeze for 1 1/2 hours. Remove 15 minutes before serving.

BACKYARD BBQs AND YOUR BUMP

We like the hot weather for a lot of reasons, but our favorite part is spending more time outside. We are writing to you from the Northeast, so the warmth (really) only starts to get to us now. Eating al fresco, if you will, is something we look forward to all year. What better way to spend that time than to throw a barbecue, barbeque, BBQ, BabyQ? Whatever you call it, we’re there!

You can sit pretty this year, because not only are you eating for two, you probably won’t be the one on grill duty. (Unless you want to!) You can soak up the sun in style, while munching on fresh fruit with a cold lemonade in your hands, trying to balance a plate full of food.

CINCO DE MAMA!

Cinco de Mama! great source of vitamins and minerals for expecting moms; brain power for mommy and baby

Let’s take a minute to appreciate the almighty avocado. To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, we’re mixing up the classic guacamole. And no, we do not charge extra for our guac!

To begin, avocados are amazing for pregnant women. They have folic acid; they have calcium; they have vitamins; they have minerals and they have that healthy fat which boosts brain power for both mommy and baby.

Our first recipe is the plain ol’ guacamole… as simple as it is scrumptious.

  • Deshell and mash up 3 avocados, mix in ½ of a finely chopped red onion, add in about ¼ cup of cilantro (do less if that just isn’t your taste), pour in the juice of ½ of a lime, sprinkle in salt and black pepper until you can’t resist the creamy goodness. You can also add in 1 cup of cherry tomatoes for more texture. Get your favorite chips or pitas and dip away. If you want a creamier guac with a tangy finish, replace 1 of the avocados with ¼ cup of Greek yogurt.

Let’s sweeten the deal with some fruity guacamole ideas.

  • Get the flesh of 2 large avocados all mashed and smooth, leave some chunks if you desire, then mix in ¼ cup of pine nuts, a ½ cup of pomegranate seeds, pour in the juice of 1 lime, then season with salt and pepper.
  • To make your guacamole even fruitier, replace the pine nuts with ½ cup of finely chopped pineapple, replace the pomegranate seeds (or keep them!) with ½ cup small chunks of mango, add 2 jalapeño peppers that are both seeded and finely chopped. Add a minced garlic clove in there too. You can add ¼ cup of onions if you want as well. Continue with lime juice, salt and pepper.
  • Not into trop guac? How about strawberry peach guacamole? Mix 3 avocados with 1 cup chopped strawberries, 2 peeled and chopped peaches, the juice of 1 lemon and 1 tablespoon basil. Fresh and ready to be dipped and devoured.

Wait… there’s more!

  • Need a simple and satisfying guacamole recipe? Make the classic recipe, add in ¼ cup of feta cheese and chopped up bacon. You’re welcome!

Has there ever been a month that gives more summer envy than May?  There’s the little taste of heat, Memorial Day is on the horizon and we get the best Justin Timberlake memes. So, to kick off the new month, we are dedicating the first two weeks to swim! Maternity swim is in and we want to get you out and about.

The thing we love about being pregnant in the summer, perhaps is the thing you are most afraid of… having a belly. But here’s the best part – YOU DO NOT NEED TO SUCK IT IN THIS YEAR! You got the beach bump and it’s beautiful.
