Olivia’s Honest Beauty Favorites

As a mom, I am big fan of The Honest Company’s personal care and cleaning supplies so I was most excited when Jessica Alba announced Honest Beauty was launching. During my visit to Los Angeles earlier this month, I had the chance to check out the new line of safe, high performance cosmetics at the Honest Beauty Pop-Up Shop at The Grove. If you live nearby or are visiting LA, you should definitely add it to your list!15The natural wood, soft lighting and glam decor give the shop a serene vibe and complement the equally pretty packaging and product shades perfectly.
IMG_9612The straightforward layout with makeup and skincare displayed separately on marble and Lucite® fixtures (hello-gorgeous!), each marked Face, Eyes, Lips or Cheeks, make it super easy to shop.
56Most impressive were the computer demo screens that, with a click of a button, reproduced different looks directly on my face! I could choose from Fresh, Sunny, Chic, Daring and Glam to try out different looks without ever applying any make-up… genius! The Chic look featuring a cat eye and pink lip was my fave!
2The products that are now in my make-up routine are the luminizing powdergel cleanser, the kissable lip crayon and of course my favorite Honest makeup wipes.

5 Best Fall Skincare Products for Pregnancy

Guest Editor: Kristen Diamond, Beauty and Lingerie Buyer

Cooler temperatures can bring newfound skincare dilemmas— especially if you are expecting! Who better to dish on the best Fall beauty picks that are safe for momma and baby than our resident guru Kristen? Kristen just happens to be getting ready for the arrival of her second baby— a little girl, due any day—so read along for the products getting her through the final stretch and the rest of the season!KRISTEN BEAUTYFrom Kristen

I’ve been planning and preparing for my little girl’s impending arrival and I am so excited that the wait is almost over! Now that we are moving into Fall, I’ve naturally switched up my beauty routine and only use pregnancy-safe products that are free of harsh chemicals but still effective. Here are my favorites:KristenEssentials BLOGTreatment: Mama Mio’s Pregnancy Boob Tube soothes, hydrates and even firms. I use it after the shower and will continue doing so after baby arrives. It’s worth noting that this cream is safe for moms to continue using if they plan to breastfeed.

Body Oil: Body oils are a great way to nourish and maintain moisture throughout pregnancy and beyond. I’m a fan of both the eucalyptus and lavender oils from Basq. I plan on packing both in my hospital bag to keep me calm and relaxed!

Lip Balm: I always have an Honest Lip Balm on hand, especially in the Fall when chapped lips can be problematic. Oh and I’m also obsessed with Honest’s Hand Sanitizing Spray since it’s just as hydrating and is perfect for on-the-go to keep germs at bay.

Body Scrub: Exfoliation is key when the weather cools PLUS your skin takes a toll during pregnancy. I recommend a body scrub like Basq’s Sugar Body Polish to slough away dry skin before moisturizing with an all over body lotion like Basq’s Mega Moisture Cream.

Nail Polish: I love all of the dark nail colors for fall. Butter London’s Nail Lacquer in Posh Bird is one of my favorites!

What’s In Her Bag // Olivia’s Vacation Beauty Essentials

Next week we leave for our family vacation so I thought I would share some of my travel essentials! I am looking forward to spending quality time with my boys, relaxing by the pool and getting in lots of beach time. All that time in the sun means that sunscreen is a must!2Everyone in our family uses Honest Company’s organic healing balm to keep our skin hydrated along with Nine Naturals Body Wash, which saves room and makes packing easier! My make up routine is super simple, too; I use Dior Airflash spray foundation  since it’s quick and easy to apply. For the beach, I’m bringing a good book, and accessorizing with a bright pedi, flip flops, a panama hat and my favorite shades.

As you may have read, I am huge fan of The Honest Company’s Carryall Satchel! Since I have to leave ample room for my son’s toys, clothing changes and snacks, I find keeping a clutch stocked with all my essentials that I can toss in and take out as needed is the way to go. IMG_96553Being a mama, I ALWAYS have hand sanitizer in there; Honest’s sanitizer spray is my new fave since it’s gentle and mom and kid friendly. Since summer is here, I’ve switched up my beauty routine, opting for a sun-soaked glow with a bright lip and nail. Since sun tanning is a no go, my secret is a self-tanning towelette. They are so easy to transport and you don’t have to worry about leakage. A punchy lip color is perfect for quickly refreshing my make-up look while a nail polish is a must to have on hand (literally!) for those inevitable chips. I’ve also been using Mama Mio’s Gorgeous Glow skincare system and especially love the eye serum. Pulling it all together is a fabulous pair of Wayfarers; I never leave home without them!

Honest Founder Christopher Gavigan on Fatherhood + What He Wants Most for Father’s Day

Guest Editor: Christopher Gavigan, Founder and Chief Product Officer of The Honest Company

In honor of Father’s Day, we are kicking the holiday weekend off with a special guest post from Christopher Gavigan, father of three and one of the founders of The Honest Company! Christopher is also the Company’s Chief Product Officer and he and Honest have had quite the busy week; the Company announced a forthcoming beauty line and Christopher and cofounder Jessica Alba ventured to DC to lobby for toxic chemical reform. I am so glad he found a few moments to do some Q and A! Keep reading for an inside look at Christopher’s most important role as dad and to hear how he and wife Jessica Capshaw (that’s Dr. Arizona Robbins for all of you Grey’s Anatomy fans!), will be spending the weekend!Christopher Family

What do you enjoy most about being a dad? Being a parent is one of life’s eternal purposes – being connected to someone is enormously humbling to think about, but in its daily intricacies, it’s so enjoyable and incredibly fun (most of the time!) I love being a part of intentional participation in my kids’ lives with my wife. Together, we join alongside them and try to do our best to lead by example. Kids need quality, not quantity, so we are all in when we are with them; that grounds me to slow down, be present and give myself. Anyone will agree that undoubtedly feels so, so good.

How will you be celebrating? I’ll be on the East End of Long Island, New York with my kids and wife. We will “play it by ear” (as my father used to say) and wake with the kids. Then, I’ll make my famous Daddy Pancakes with them, which is whole wheat batter filled with plant-based proteins and fresh fruit topped with VT maple syrup. We’ll let the day unfold after that. Maybe some beach playing and swimming in the Atlantic, or scoot to a yoga or SoulCycle class with my wife, and then a calm evening of lawn games and an outdoor picnic, which hopefully includes lobster. I’m no doubt abundantly blessed!

Okay, so how about work- what’s that like? My days at Honest are filled with (intentionally and literally) running through the office; we are a mission-based business with so much more to accomplish. I truly love leading a culture of innovation and change-makers focused on creating healthier, non-toxic products for today’s family. It’s a revolution of awareness, transparency and integrity. My Honest days are filled with joining our team in developing better products, executing with excellence, putting out fires (we are the Honest Company not the “perfect company”) and lifting up our employee base with gratitude, collaboration and passion. I have the best job in the world!

What are your favorite products? You know that’s like asking me which child I love the most… impossible for me to answer as the Product Ambassador at Honest. I use all our products all the time, and continually have new development samples and optimized formulas (in small white bottles with labels) all over my house. My wife Jessica despises them. I slather my kids’ spray surfaces in the home – quick optimization and refinement (insights primarily harvested from our own Honest members) is how we’ve humbly been able to deliver delight and build our loyal base. Overall, I’m a fanatic about our Healing Balm, Vetiver Deodorant, Multi-Surface Spray, Laundry Detergent and Air + Fabric Fresheners.

Any Father’s Day gift you want or are excited for? It’s unattainable, but because you said any I would have to choose to bottle certain moments of my life. The more you know, the less you really need. I have a full and fortunate life, and I’d like to relive those special moments of times spent with my family and kids. The problem is… I’d need a very big place to store all those bottles!

You can shop The Honest Company’s products, which are perfect for new and expecting moms and their families in our stores and online! Some of my favorites are the sanitizing spraylip balm trio and body oil! -Olivia

Make Every Day a Good Hair Day This Summer

Dealing with high humidity and heat during the summer throws me into a hair tizzy! I have naturally curly hair that I prefer blown out straight, so summer weather is always problematic for me. I know that pregnancy hormones can also affect the texture of hair, so I am always telling my clients and girlfriends about quick styles. Since becoming a mom my beauty time has been cut in half, so I always look for simple yet chic hairstyles I too can easily achieve at home.

At our summer photo shoot we worked with Los Angeles’ hair stylist David Cox, who styled the models with some of the hottest dos of the season! I love that these looks are not only totally of-the-moment, but so easy to achieve too. Simplicity is crucial when you’re trying to wrangle a toddler or get out of the house to make it to that early meeting!coprdThe Messy Pony // This is one of my faves since getting this look is usually better if your hair hasn’t been freshly washed (hello! a fresh blow-out is so not the mommy norm anymore.) Just tease the crown of your hair, apply hairspray and pull into a mid to high ponytail. Finish with some spray on the sides of your head to keep it looking sleek.SIDE BRAIDThe Side Braid // I love this style for a laid back casual look, but it could also tone down a polished outfit as well. Pull your hair in a low pony to one side and braid. Keep this look a bit messy- NOT perfect, by adding some hairspray and tousle before you braid.adfgThe Top Bun // The higher the bun… the better! Simply pull all of your hair up and smooth into a high ponytail; then, twist until it starts to coil around itself. Wrap hair around the base of the pony and secure with a hair tie. Gently pull on pieces of the bun for a fuller look. Keep flyaways at bay with some hairspray to lock in this posh do.HALFHalf Up // This is one of the freshest looks I’m seeing right now. Grab the sections above your ears and bring them towards the back of your head. Secure into a pony for a traditional half-up hairstyle or mix it up by braiding or twisting into a bun.HATThe Panama Hat // When all else fails, opt for the IT accessory of the season: The Panama Hat. The best part? No hairstyle required!

Winter Skincare Tips for Pregnancy

The cold winter weather can really take its toll on your beauty routine. As an expectant mama you have specific beauty challenges, like dry and itchy skin, that need special care. Dry skin, cracked heels and elbows, a washed-out complexion and an itchy scalp (all things I dealt with during my pregnancy) can be combatted with the right products.

It’s important to look and feel good during your pregnancy. Your current beauty routine may need some tweaks now that you are expecting. Not only does the texture of your skin change during pregnancy with your hormones working over-time, but that baby bump is growing and stretching your skin every day. I want to talk about some of the latest products that I love for new and expecting mothers. These keep you soft and moisturized during a cold spell, plus many of them are designed with pregnant women in mind. They are gentle on your skin, made without harsh chemicals AND still give great results.WinterBeauty_2-608x1037Finding some pampering time during pregnancy and as a new mom is vital. I try to take some me time once a week… (Ok- maybe every two weeks.) I spend a Friday night or Saturday morning alone with my beauty routine. For me that can be as simple as a nice bath, exfoliation, face mask or a mini-mani and pedi.  I throw on my soft robe, slippers and spend an hour alone to decompress and take care of myself. When you have kids, it’s obviously hard to find that alone time. Sometimes, that means taking an hour after my son has gone to bed on a Friday night, or letting my husband do Saturday morning breakfast while I do-ME. It’s worth it!

A great place to start is with a nice body scrub. Basq has a fabulous Citrus Sugar Body Polish that I swear by! It’s great for before and after baby to slough off and smooth dry skin. I use it every other day. A gentle facial cleanser and moisturizer are also key! Juice Beauty, makes a great cleansing milk and super silky moisturizer that are not only effective, but also organic. Another essential mom-to-be product is body oil. BASQ skincare’s calming oils are great for protection against stretching and are packed with natural oils and omegas. Use it after the shower or even at night before bed. I love the lavender oil because it’s calming, which helps with headaches in the evenings.WinterBeauty_3-608x775If you are like me, then a little additional glow always seems to help during the fall and winter. I extend my tan with St. Tropez Naturals Radiance Self Tan Lotion. This self-tanner is 100% natural with vegan ingredients and gives a nice real-looking glow. Lastly, I think it’s important to take care of your hands and feet when you are pregnant, especially in this dryer season. A pumice stone for a little at-home pedicure does the trick. Butter London Hardwear offers a nice topcoat, without harmful chemicals. I hope you can find a little time for yourself to try some of these fabulous beauty products! -Olivia

New Mom Must-haves

So I’ve been talking a lot lately about being a new mom and some of the pieces that are essential in the days and months after you bring baby home. Check out the post I did earlier this month: What to Wear: New Mom Edition, where I gave my picks for some great new mom pieces. All this new mom talk got me reminiscing to when Grey was just an infant. I’ve been going through all of the photos from those first few days home from the hospital up until today. I am in awe at how big my little boy is getting and how time flies!

I will always cherish those moments, and they definitely reminded me that I have to get on top of that scrap-book I’ve been meaning to put together for Greyson. Flipping through those photos made me think about you guys, so I thought I’d share some photos and some of my personal favorite maternity pieces and pregnancy products I needed as a new mom! All of these items I still use today, almost 17 months after bringing my little man home- so that’s proof that you’ll get mileage out of these!olivia_newmom-1_608x6541I will always cherish those moments, and they definitely reminded me that I have to get on top of that scrap-book I’ve been meaning to put together for Greyson. For Greyson, his two favorites were and still are his swaddles and Sophie the Giraffe. These super soft cotton swaddles do triple duty. They act as a swaddle, burp cloth, and nursing cover. I love them!  Sophie is a teether that Grey used as an infant and still does. This adorable giraffe also acts as a sense stimulator for babies, due to its soft texture, contrasting spots, the smell of the natural made rubber, the distinct light squeak it makes and of course its ability to be chewed!New Mom Musts As for me, a quintessential leather maternity jacket, diaper bag or tote, and maternity or post pregnancy tee are essential in my wardrobe! And please, please, please, do not store away or GIVE away your Secret Fit Belly® maternity jeans. They make for a great postpartum pant…you know I still wear mine! Another easy style tip for moms on the go looking for that cool-factor: opt for a sneaker since they have great support for when you are on your feet with the kiddos all day. Choose a slip on or high-top. I live in Converse and Vans on the weekend, as opposed to my running kicks, since they add a little life and coolness to a denim look.  For my night time routine I keep my skin soft and hydrated (check out our beauty products, featuring high end brands, naturally made skincare and amazingly moisturizing ingredients); I also try my best to get some zzz’s when I can. Who am I kidding? I may never have a good night sleep again, but I’m not complaining!  Being a new mom means more to me. -OliviaNew Mom MustsOlivia & Greyson //  Aden + Anais Swaddle // Sophie the Giraffe // Olivia & Greyson // Maternity Sweater // Maternity Leather Jacket // Nursing Bra // Secret Fit Belly® maternity jeans // Naturopathica Beauty Products // Simple Sugars // Diaper Bag // High Top Vans S8 Sneakers // Chanel Sleep Mask

Best Beauty Products for Pregnancy

When I became pregnant with my son it became super important for me to watch what I put into and onto my body. Things I had never even considered before, like harsh chemicals and certain anti-aging products, were now all off limits. I began looking for products that were carcinogen, paraben, phthalate and formaldehyde free. My beauty routine didn’t change much, but the products I used did. In fact, I still continue to use most of them.Beauty_Products-1_608x805

I highly suggest being aware of what is in the beauty products you use, especially when you’re pregnant in order to make smarter decisions for you and your baby. The products I recommend are all some of my favorites because they are more natural, gentle and effective.

Brands like Naturopathica, Burt’s Bees and Mustela not only give great results, but are perfect for sensitive skin that expecting and new moms may begin to get. Another important factor for me was and still is protecting not only my own, but also my son’s skin. During pregnancy and even now, we use sunscreen every day and when I’m looking for a little glow I go to Naturals St. Tropez Self Tanner.
