Guest Editor: Kristen Diamond, Beauty and Lingerie Buyer

Cooler temperatures can bring newfound skincare dilemmas— especially if you are expecting! Who better to dish on the best Fall beauty picks that are safe for momma and baby than our resident guru Kristen? Kristen just happens to be getting ready for the arrival of her second baby— a little girl, due any day—so read along for the products getting her through the final stretch and the rest of the season!KRISTEN BEAUTYFrom Kristen

I’ve been planning and preparing for my little girl’s impending arrival and I am so excited that the wait is almost over! Now that we are moving into Fall, I’ve naturally switched up my beauty routine and only use pregnancy-safe products that are free of harsh chemicals but still effective. Here are my favorites:KristenEssentials BLOGTreatment: Mama Mio’s Pregnancy Boob Tube soothes, hydrates and even firms. I use it after the shower and will continue doing so after baby arrives. It’s worth noting that this cream is safe for moms to continue using if they plan to breastfeed.

Body Oil: Body oils are a great way to nourish and maintain moisture throughout pregnancy and beyond. I’m a fan of both the eucalyptus and lavender oils from Basq. I plan on packing both in my hospital bag to keep me calm and relaxed!

Lip Balm: I always have an Honest Lip Balm on hand, especially in the Fall when chapped lips can be problematic. Oh and I’m also obsessed with Honest’s Hand Sanitizing Spray since it’s just as hydrating and is perfect for on-the-go to keep germs at bay.

Body Scrub: Exfoliation is key when the weather cools PLUS your skin takes a toll during pregnancy. I recommend a body scrub like Basq’s Sugar Body Polish to slough away dry skin before moisturizing with an all over body lotion like Basq’s Mega Moisture Cream.

Nail Polish: I love all of the dark nail colors for fall. Butter London’s Nail Lacquer in Posh Bird is one of my favorites!

Mother and Co-founder of Mama Mio, Sian Sutherland, is always on the go! My Kindle Paper White: How did we survive without this? Amazing when jet lagged and I can read a little with the tiny glow from the screen. This invention has totally reintroduced me to reading after losing the habit with kids!

Mio The Activist Firming Active Body Oil: I always have a travel size of this incredible all purpose oil. Trebles up as a facial oil and an overnight hair treatment.  Packed with vitamins, Omegas and antioxidants, it is based on our infamous Mama Mio the Tummy Rub that we created for my first son (Charlie, now 6’5”!) so the experience is even more special as the essential oil fragrance takes me back to such a special time (with FREE rose coloured spectacles thrown in!).

Training Gear: I love any kind of fitness, and travel often introduces me to new things – like aerial yoga in New York recently! So I always have a tiny bundle of tanks and pants that take up no space, but remind me to find a class somewhere; wherever I am.

Mama Mio Lucky Legs: When I was pregnant, my legs swelled up and were really uncomfortable, especially during warmer weather.  We created Lucky Legs cooling serum for exactly this issue and I still use it today. Brilliant on planes to keep circulation flowing in lower legs and feet; perfect to help recover post a high heel event and just spot on to give instant refreshment and relief using on pulse points and temples to stop tension headaches and jet lag.

My Gold Top: Made of some strange leatherette fabric, this instantly adds a pop to any outfit!

What’s In Her Bag // Olivia’s Vacation Beauty Essentials

Next week we leave for our family vacation so I thought I would share some of my travel essentials! I am looking forward to spending quality time with my boys, relaxing by the pool and getting in lots of beach time. All that time in the sun means that sunscreen is a must!2Everyone in our family uses Honest Company’s organic healing balm to keep our skin hydrated along with Nine Naturals Body Wash, which saves room and makes packing easier! My make up routine is super simple, too; I use Dior Airflash spray foundation  since it’s quick and easy to apply. For the beach, I’m bringing a good book, and accessorizing with a bright pedi, flip flops, a panama hat and my favorite shades.

Pregnancy Skin Care: The Power Of Peptides

The following post is sponsored by our friends at basq NYC

The beauty world is buzzing about peptides in pregnancy skin care products and for good reason.  They may be the key to faster, smarter skin repair.  As you can imagine, anything that can make a real difference in the battle to prevent and repair stretch marks gets our attention.  Not to mention, smart repair means a better post-pregnancy bounce back for your changing skin.  Here’s a little overview on the ingredients and why they may work for you.

What We Know: The building blocks of skin strength and stretch come from collagen & elastin fibers.  When stretched too far, these fibers can break down.  As that damage surfaces, it shows up as a stretch mark.  Enter peptides and amino acids that act as messengers.  Long chain peptides direct skin to build collagen, while short chain peptides address skin’s inflammatory response, which helps speed tissue regeneration. Put these two powerhouses together and you have a serious strategy for fixing stretched, damaged skin.

The Catch:  You can’t rely on peptides alone.  Messengers need something to communicate.  So this means that peptides need to work within the context of other ingredients, so they can “tell” the skin how to put everything to work.  You need a mix of ingredients that nourish, hydrate, strengthen and build skin resiliency.  Peptides will make that blend work harder and more effectively, directing skin response so you get the results you want.

basq Peptides Picks:  For stretch mark prevention and repair we use BioPeptides, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide and Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7. Featured in our New Stretch Mark Vanishing Serum and Intensive Treatment Stretch Mark Butter, these power peptides help fix damage at a whole new level.

The Extras:  Shea Butter has always been the better butter for marks; it’s the one with some real proof in clinical studies.  Add in omega rich oils and nutrient rich plant extracts and you have the perfect base to activate peptides.

After 9 months of skin stretching, the body needs the power of peptides.  Boost your results with smart ingredients that tell your skin to build core strength and fix damage faster. Peptides may just be the key to making stretch marks a faded memory.

Summer Pregnancy Skincare Secrets from a Pro

Guest Editor: Kristen Diamond, Beauty and Lingerie Buyer

Warmer weather means manis, pedis and lots of moisturizing so I reached out to Kristen, our resident beauty guru, to get the round-up of her favorite products that are safe for moms-to-be. You may recognize Kristen from We’re Expecting Too; she is currently pregnant with her second child, a girl!GRAs told by Kristen:

I am so excited to have another baby! I have a three-year-old son, Ryan, so when we found out I was having a girl, we were ecstatic; I have had so much fun decorating her room and picking out her little outfits already!

As a soon-to-be second time mom and the beauty and skincare buyer for Motherhood Maternity and A Pea in the Pod, I have a lot of experience with pregnancy-safe products. The brands we carry offer formulas that are free of all of the harsh chemicals and effective, which is why I use them even when I am not pregnant. Here are my must-haves:Pregnancy Skin Care EssentialsNail Polish: Maintaining a mani and pedi is a must in the summer! I do my own and love the Butter London Nail Lacquer since it’s 3-Free. A great summer shade is “Poole.” Their top coat also works really well and because it lacks many of the harsh chemicals other nail polishes have, the scent is not strong.

Body Scrub: Exfoliate! I am currently obsessed with the Honest Sea Salt and Sugar Body Scrub. It is amazing and I use it all of the time! It smells great and leaves you super soft.

Body Oil: Keeping your skin hydrated during the summer is important! I go back and forth between the Basq Lavender Oil and The Honest Company Body Oil. They both soak in really well and have a nice scent. I always drink tons of water, too, to keep hydrated.

Lip Balm: I love The Honest Company Lip Balm Trio and I keep them everywhere because I am a fanatic about using lip balm. No one wants dry lips, especially when pregnant!

Sun Block: I am crazy about using sun block on my son and myself. The Nine Natural Sunscreen is a great option, as is the Honest sun stick that we carry, which makes it so easy to lotion tiny faces on-the-go!

Facial Wipes: I can’t get enough of facial wipes! I keep the Honest 3-in-1 Facial Towelettes and Mama Mio Gorgeous Glow Swipes in my beach bag so I always feel fresh. I use them on Ryan all of the time too! The Honest ones also take off eye makeup really well.

For Some Extra Pampering: Mama Mio Lucky Legs  instantly cools and relaxes your legs; great for after a long day at the beach or pool and chasing after a toddler!

Get a Gorgeous Glow with Mama Mio

I have crazy combination skin that has been sensitive for years, including while I was pregnant. I continue to steer clear from products that are too harsh so I was excited to try Mama Mio’s Gorgeous Glow System (YES- it’s awesome to work for a company where I have some of the safest beauty products at my fingertips!) As it turns out, I’m a total fan.ASDFGHere’s the deal: It’s a three step system consisting of a wash, moisturizer and eye cream that are safe for pregnant and nursing mothers, or ANY mom like me who wants softening and effective skincare, but without harsh chemicals!

I’ve been using the wash in the morning and again at night, followed by the brightening day and night cream. I love that the wash leaves my skin soft, but also does a great job at removing my makeup. The cream has a fabulous natural spa-like scent and is super lightweight; I consider this a bonus, since I never want a greasy finish. I follow up my night time routine with the eye cream to combat morning puffiness. Have you tried this new system yet? I would love to hear your thoughts on it and any of your skincare musts! –Olivia

Happy [Mother] Earth Day

EarthDay v3In honor of Earth Day, I am rounding up my favorite eco-friendly beauty products. From deodorant to lip balm, these picks are effective and safe for moms-to be and make going green easy any and every day. One of our newest brands to arrive in stores, Nine Naturals, makes a shampoo and deodorant that are now part of my daily routine. The sunscreen is also going to be essential for those fast-approaching beach days. I simply can’t get enough of The Honest Company’s lip balms— and neither can my son Greyson!—which come in delectable flavors lavender mint and sweet orange vanilla and make my lips super soft. I have them in all my bags and at my desk at the ready. The body lotion is another must that I slather on both me and Grey. It is light, clean and hydrating. For moms-to-be who want to prevent and treat stretch marks, Basq’s Intensive Treatment’s Stretch Mark Butter is the answer. The cream boosts collagen and elastin renewal and repair, as it absorbs instantly.-Olivia

Make Your Nine Months Safe, Organic + Beautiful

BLOG-BeautyNineNaturals v2While searching for safe, chemical-free beauty options and tirelessly scanning ingredient labels during her first pregnancy, Nine Naturals founder Grace Lee, who is currently pregnant with her second!, noticed that many products presented as “natural” actually weren’t, and those that were didn’t match the high-performance standards that she valued. Wanting to fill this void in the market, she created Nine Naturals on the principle that beauty should be simple, smart, and safe for moms and moms-to-be.

All Nine Naturals product formulations use 100% naturally-derived ingredients that are pre-screened for health and safety during pregnancy and nursing. They are free of dangerous toxins including sulfates, parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, DEA, synthetic fragrances, and artificial preservatives. I am so excited that we’ve partnered with Grace to bring this amazing line of products to expecting women and new moms!

The Nine Naturals collection includes Replenishing Belly Butter, Natural Sunscreen, Nourishing Shampoo & Conditioner and Soothing Body Wash. Often times, a harsh fragrance will deter me from a product, especially when I was pregnant. However, these products have a soft scent. I love the gentle formulas and can see why so many expecting women are fans! PLUS the sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner are a must before during and after pregnancy, to keep your tresses soft and glossy. They are my new favorites! I think you’ll love the whole line so head to our stores or over to www.apeainthepod.com to shop them. -Olivia

Whichever you choose, your skin is in for a treat! –Olivia

Winter Skincare Tips for Pregnancy

The cold winter weather can really take its toll on your beauty routine. As an expectant mama you have specific beauty challenges, like dry and itchy skin, that need special care. Dry skin, cracked heels and elbows, a washed-out complexion and an itchy scalp (all things I dealt with during my pregnancy) can be combatted with the right products.

It’s important to look and feel good during your pregnancy. Your current beauty routine may need some tweaks now that you are expecting. Not only does the texture of your skin change during pregnancy with your hormones working over-time, but that baby bump is growing and stretching your skin every day. I want to talk about some of the latest products that I love for new and expecting mothers. These keep you soft and moisturized during a cold spell, plus many of them are designed with pregnant women in mind. They are gentle on your skin, made without harsh chemicals AND still give great results.WinterBeauty_2-608x1037Finding some pampering time during pregnancy and as a new mom is vital. I try to take some me time once a week… (Ok- maybe every two weeks.) I spend a Friday night or Saturday morning alone with my beauty routine. For me that can be as simple as a nice bath, exfoliation, face mask or a mini-mani and pedi.  I throw on my soft robe, slippers and spend an hour alone to decompress and take care of myself. When you have kids, it’s obviously hard to find that alone time. Sometimes, that means taking an hour after my son has gone to bed on a Friday night, or letting my husband do Saturday morning breakfast while I do-ME. It’s worth it!

A great place to start is with a nice body scrub. Basq has a fabulous Citrus Sugar Body Polish that I swear by! It’s great for before and after baby to slough off and smooth dry skin. I use it every other day. A gentle facial cleanser and moisturizer are also key! Juice Beauty, makes a great cleansing milk and super silky moisturizer that are not only effective, but also organic. Another essential mom-to-be product is body oil. BASQ skincare’s calming oils are great for protection against stretching and are packed with natural oils and omegas. Use it after the shower or even at night before bed. I love the lavender oil because it’s calming, which helps with headaches in the evenings.WinterBeauty_3-608x775If you are like me, then a little additional glow always seems to help during the fall and winter. I extend my tan with St. Tropez Naturals Radiance Self Tan Lotion. This self-tanner is 100% natural with vegan ingredients and gives a nice real-looking glow. Lastly, I think it’s important to take care of your hands and feet when you are pregnant, especially in this dryer season. A pumice stone for a little at-home pedicure does the trick. Butter London Hardwear offers a nice topcoat, without harmful chemicals. I hope you can find a little time for yourself to try some of these fabulous beauty products! -Olivia
