I have worked for Destination Maternity as a Copywriter within the Creative Department for over two years. Each day I am amazed by the talent of the people on my team but when they threw me a surprise shower, I was truly blown away!

The theme was a carnival and it was probably the classiest and chicest carnival I have ever been to! There were rustic, old-timey touches, mixed with more modern and whimsical cotton candy bouquets and baskets made to look like hot air balloons. It’s hard to keep emotions in check when you feel like a balloon yourself and you’re pretty much full-term, but I held back the tears the best I could. The décor was incredible, but the gifts were even better! I received adorable clothing, shoes, books, a tutu and toys for my little one, and a nursing pillow and a gift card to get myself a (much-needed) massage!

Preparing to go on maternity leave and leaving your daily routine, including the people you see and work with every day, has made me anxious. However, the shower made me feel so supported and has helped ease the transition for me. Mamas-to-be need the extra love, especially around the last few weeks, and I really cannot put into words how much I was touched by such kindness!

Jessica Simpson on What Matters Most During The Holidays

With an Instagram filled with precious snaps of husband Eric and two children, Maxwell Drew and Ace Knute, it is no surprise that Jessica Simpson has one priority this holiday season: family.

Blogger Itsy Bitsy Indulgences on Quelling First Time Mama Fears

Guest Editor: Shannon Pulsifer of Itsy Bitsy Indulgences

When I first found out I was pregnant, I was in a state of shock. My husband and I had just returned from a two week trip to Europe less than 24 hours prior. I remember feeling so faint, but wasn’t sure if it was major jetlag or something bigger. And surprise… it was!

Being a first time mom, I had no clue what to expect. I immediately became nervous that my running routine would shake the baby or that my yoga sequences would somehow squish her. Of course, my doctor reassured me that none of these fears were plausible.itsy bitsy 2

As each simple fear was assuaged by the doctor, my thoughts became focused on the future. Having been a married couple for 5 years, and having immensely enjoyed our time together, I became fearful of how my husband and I would navigate the changes when our little bundle of joy arrived. Would we still be able to travel? Would we be too tired for date nights? I found that talking through these fears with my husband lessened the worry and we have come to the conclusion that a happy marriage will provide a happy and secure home for our little girl.

Being a first time mom has made me feel like a magnet for advice, which can often be overwhelming with all the different opinions on topics like sleeping, breastfeeding and birthing options. I have come to appreciate all moms’ perspectives, but have settled into the fact that my husband and I will raise our daughter based on our beliefs and lifestyle.

I find it fascinating how much work goes into preparing for a little being we have yet to meet! The fact that I have so much love for her already amazes me. I’ve found that there are a few areas of focus when preparing for a baby:

Nursery: I really wanted to create a space where she will feel safe and cozy…and where I will enjoy early morning feedings. I’ve scoured Pinterest since it’s a great place for nursery inspiration.

Education: We’ve attended the birthing classes and I’m not sure if they made me feel more prepared or more terrified?!? However, I feel that the more informed I am, the better the choices I can make. I will be taking a breastfeeding course and my husband is going to be taking a “Daddy Boot-Camp”. I’ve purchased books on sleeping and eating too.

Baby Essentials: A piece of advice a friend gave to me is to purchase a package of diapers each time I go to the store, that way it doesn’t feel as overwhelming. Maybe equally as important is the little wardrobe I have been cultivating for her along with the library of children’s’ books we hope to read to her nightly.

I’m sure I’ve missed so many things, but I guess that’s what the journey of parenthood is all about: trial and error, trying your very best, trusting one another and having fun while you go!

Wendy Bellissimo’s Halloween Tips

Guest Editor: Wendy Bellissimo, Designer

I’m all about simple yet chic holiday décor, especially now that I’m a mom myself and have so little time! With Halloween approaching, I enlisted the help of Wendy Bellissimo, designer behind her namesake maternity collection, to share some tips on decorating for Halloween made simple.front-door3f

From Wendy

As a designer and mom of four I am completely in love with holidays and the tradition of them all!  For our family, Halloween kicks off a 6 month run of non-stop decorating. Here are some of my secrets for starting the season off in a fun and festive way:

First, I use bales of hay to create a festive look and to build different layers and heights for decorations.  Hay bales transition perfectly to Thanksgiving décor, so you can get two holidays out of them. Spider webs are another perfect Halloween touch. You can turn a wood pile into Halloween décor like I did here by covering it with webs and adding giant spiders.IMG_2160

Next, to add some interest, layer in different colored pumpkins in varied sizes. You can never have too many pumpkins for Halloween!

Don’t forget the twinkle lights in orange or white to go around the hay bales and wood piles or simply wrap them around your decorations. Once Halloween is almost here, we carve the jack-o-lanterns and light them all up on the front steps. Sometimes the battery operated candles work out best for that.

For the big day try our Bellissimo Original and yummy Halloween Party “Brain” Dip.  It’s delicious and the kids will love it.

Hope you all have a Happy Halloween! Love, Wendy

The Perfect Nautical Nursery

Nurseries To CraveA friend of mine just decorated her little boy’s nursery in an adorable nautical theme! She loves the beach and ocean, so she brought those earth and water tones into the room where she can spend time with her little one. I love the results and the theme! Nautical is a trend in interior and nursery design, in particular, that never gets old. It’s continually being updated with new elements. Nurseries To Crave

If you are thinking about trying this theme, remember to include lots of white to keep the room looking fresh and airy. Navy is a great neutral too; plus, it will transition well into a big kid’s room. Stripes, whales, anchors and sail boats make for perfect touches for this motif, whether on a pillow, wall mural or mobile. AND… for the final finisher, try choosing an accent color of light blue, yellow or even green for some fun and freshness. Baby’s layette and clothing will also go perfectly with this color palette, so it all works together. Happy decorating! -Olivia

Glowing Thanksgiving Decor

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite times of the year! I love the change in the weather, harvest colors, and that it becomes the official start of the holiday season. I also love to entertain (as you may have read.)  I always make my home decor and table settings match the mood of the season. For me it’s all about the little things, whether it’s a great personal accessory or a small accent; the little touches bring big results.Thanksgiving DecorThis year I am all about white and gold since they flow so seamlessly from Halloween, to Thanksgiving, past Christmas and into New Years. White pumpkins are so easy to find this time of year and make such an elegant and easy centerpiece or accent for Thanksgiving. I put some mini-pumpkins in a metallic bowl on my dining room table and filled them in vases around my home. It’s super simple, but people always compliment me on them.

I also love the idea of using gold paint to create an even more chic table-scape. Add some mercury glass votives and you have a simple way to decorate your holiday table. Flowers or even pinecones can also complete the look. You don’t have to go far for these items; they are at the grocery store this time of year.
Thanksgiving DecorGold and metallic touches are also everywhere right now, even in our maternity collections at A Pea in the Pod and Motherhood Maternity. Metallic polish, blush, and pretty undergarments will get you in the [very pretty] holiday spirit.  You’ll find some great metallic tops too that are about to make your holidays glow.  Happy Thanksgiving! – OliviaThanksgiving Decor

Golden Nursery Inspiration

Well before my son came into my life I was forever switching up my interior décor. It’s a favorite past time of mine, maybe because I am a designer at heart. I constantly am keeping up with the latest in-home decor and always changing something. I absolutely loved decorating Grey’s nursery and since he’s now a toddler, I am still changing up the space to suit him. I did a Safari Theme for his nursery featuring giraffes and elephants, but I recently came across another nursery decor idea that I love just as much. Gold is a big element in the latest nursery design. I absolutely love how it can work for either a boy or girl too!Nurseries_3-608x1310Gold is quite chic against neutral colors like ivory and grey, plus it looks amazing with lighter shades like mint green or blush pink. To get the look just add gold frames, maybe a pillow, and sunburst mirror. If you aren’t finding the perfect gold mirror or picture frame, you can always purchase gold spray paint at your local hardware store and get a fabulous look at a fraction of the price. I also love the idea of putting a pair of baby booties in a picture box for an easy and cute wall art idea.  Freshly Picked has some of the cutest moccasins for showcasing, baby wearing, or for gifting.Nurseries_2-608x815

A great glider in your nursery is another must. I love the grey velvet one featured. It is similar to the glider we had for Greyson’s nursery. Now that he’s grown out of rocking time with mommy, we relocated the glider to my husband’s office and it works perfectly since it’s so neutral and doesn’t scream “BABY!”

To round out the nursery I also featured some of my favorite items for baby as well.  My picks are a cute baby coverall, Aden + Anais Swaddles, plush blanket and of course Sophie the Giraffe. I hope you enjoy decorating your baby’s nursery as much as I did.- Olivia

Nurseries We Love: Pop of Orange

Whether acting as an accent to an otherwise neutral décor or as a compliment to a mate on the color wheel, a pop of orange adds a sunny touch of happy to any nursery. Without being too harsh – say like a fire engine red – orange brings mellow warmth to a room that’s perfect for baby.

With a base of aqua and grey, small pops of orange bring a ray of cheer!

Nurseries We Love: A Lesson in Geometry

Bold and modern, geometric shapes add a fab element of cool to any nursery. Be it huge circles stamped on the wall to intricate hexagon patterns that accent one side of the room, this lesson in geometry has nursery decor going way outside of the box – and we love it!
