MOTHERHOOD GETS REAL ON MOTHERHOOD: SISTERS JAMIE & KRISTIN

MH BLOG NationalBestFriends 2018 v1

Last year right before Thanksgiving we met up with two sisters who were both having their first children within the next few months. Due a month apart, Jamie and Kristin came shopping with us to discuss dressing for work and home. They also walked us through their family holiday plans and staying stylish through the winter season. Well, they are back for summer!

We got the chance to meet up with the ladies and their babies to talk about life as new moms, new aunts and styling new post-baby bodies. [Let’s just say that BounceBack was a big hit!] Only a year and a half apart themselves, they have become even closer after having their babies together. We felt there was no better way to celebrate National Best Friends Day than with these two sisters and their besties in the making!

Motherhood: The last time we saw you ladies the holidays were approaching. You both had winter babies. How was it navigating through new motherhood in those first months?

Jamie: Having a newborn is scary! The first few weeks are all about figuring out what baby likes, dislikes, and what is bothering him. Now that the weather is warm and he is getting bigger, it’s getting easier and a lot more fun!

Kristin: It was hard! The flu was so bad this year and you want to show off the new babies but keep them safe as well. I asked that everyone follow my three rules: please do not come if you aren’t feeling well, please wash your hands, and please do not kiss the baby!!!

Motherhood: What maternity clothes did you keep in your wardrobe for nursing/pumping/getting back to pre-pregnancy size?

Jamie: My mother-in-law stayed with us and got all of my maternity clothes together and put them in storage for me. I am wearing the BounceBack jeans, but I purchased them after the baby was born. I do miss wearing my cute maternity dresses, and I sort of miss the bump!

Kristin: The go-to of course is leggings… also my shirts with the ruching on the sides. They help hide my mommy pouch!

Motherhood: Any funny stories about yourselves or each other that has happened since having the babies?

Jamie: One day I watched both the babies. What a workout! Gemma and Carter were sitting together and he started to eat her hand, thinking it was his. I got it on video and we all laugh about it.

Kristin: I tend to do weird things to my husband from lack of sleep. The other day I was patting his chest in my sleep and he asked me what I was doing and I told him I was putting the baby to sleep. When I realized what I was doing, we both laughed.

Motherhood: Kristin – have you been back to work yet? If so, what styles have you been wearing? And, Jamie, when you do go back in September, are there any maternity clothing you’re hanging on to?

Kristin: I am back already, and I love the black work pants that I got from the BounceBack line! They are a must-have in my weekly wardrobe. They feel like they have built in Spanx!

Jamie: I do enjoy a nice nursing bra, so I might keep this in my wardrobe, but I am really determined to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight and wear my regular clothes. It’s so hard, you have a whole new body after baby!

Motherhood: You both walked out of the store either wearing and/or purchasing BounceBack jeans/pants. What about them made them that necessary purchase?

Jamie: After having a baby, you are so overjoyed, but you don’t feel like yourself. I loved my maternity pants and felt a little silly to continue to wear them, but I needed some extra support without squeezing myself into Spanx. This just adds a medium amount of support to help new moms be more confident.

Kristin: They made me look like I didn’t just have a baby 3 months prior. It is hard because you don’t look like yourself still with the extra weight from the baby; it was nice to at least feel like myself, and they did just that!

Motherhood: Let’s get real: how are the first few weeks and months after giving birth? Women are often afraid to ask and talk about it. Get candid with us, please!

Jamie: I am very open and honest with friends and family members who are pregnant or thinking about having their first child. I had a lot of complications late in my pregnancy, and it was frightening. After having Carter, I still had some complications for a few weeks. I needed to rely on my mom, husband, and other family members to help me while I was recovering. Women are expected to give birth and then just magically jump into this “mom” role. While we willingly and selflessly do it, we need to take care of ourselves. I am so lucky to be home with Carter for 5-6 months, and I do not take any day with him for granted. Being a mom is the hardest job in the world, but it is so worth it.

Kristin: It is really challenging. There is no instruction manual. You need to listen to your child and your instincts, but with this new little human and no sleep, that gets difficult. You definitely scream/curse once a week. I’m convinced if you don’t do that you are not normal!

Motherhood: And tell us a little about those bundles of joy…

Jamie: Carter James Lobban was born on 2/21/18 at 7lb 7 oz and 19 inches long. He is an extremely happy baby who takes a lot of naps (which helps mama get things done around the house.) He is finding his voice, his hands, and his feet, so it’s amazing to watch him start to interact with us and entertain himself. He has dimples from his father, and so far his eyes are extremely blue, getting these from his mom!

Kristin: My little girl is a typical girl = drama queen! She has the cutest fake cry when she wants attention and a personality bigger than herself. She wakes up with a big smile every morning and loves playing with her feet. She has made being a mommy very easy for me. (Aside from when she loses her $#!+ once a day!) I wish I could freeze her in this stage right now. My husband and I are really enjoying her. One of my favorite parts of the day is watching him and her interact; he has the cutest smile watching her smile!

Motherhood: If there is one thing you would tell your sister about how she is doing as a mom, what would it be?

Jamie: She’s the best mom. When I had Carter I was sort of lost. She helped me and taught me so much! She’s the younger sister, but she has this mom thing down!

Kristin: She is doing great… almost too great! She keeps everything together and stresses herself out to do so. Sometimes you just have to say screw it and take a nap! She is an amazing mommy and wife. Don’t be so hard on yourself J – that little guy has the best mommy in the world who will always love and protect him!

BUMP SHOT SERIES: HOW TO STYLE YOURSELF

MH BumpSeries Part3 Blog v1

Let your style be the guiding force behind the perfect photo shoot. Whether you are a morning, afternoon or night picture poster, there’s a look to help you capture the best bump shot. Nine months is a long time, and we love the idea of using your weekly bump shot to capture times of year, holidays or even just cozy nights in to reflect what where you are in your pregnancy in more ways than one. Above all, though, you’ll want to begin by choosing pieces that flatter you and photograph well. Luckily, we have some experience with this…

1.For Pre-Workday Pictures:

You got ready for your day, so you feel the urge to strike a pose. Go ahead and shop the perfect maternity sweater, like the Cozy Cable Cowl Neck in Oatmeal, and the comfiest leggings you’ll ever own. We love the sweater, especially and obviously for the cooler months. What really makes it a great choice for a bump shot is the waffle texture- which camouflages the bump without hiding it, the curve of the hem- which fully flatters growing bellies, and the cowl neck- which frames the face.

2. For Bedtime Bump Shots

You take beauty sleep seriously, so snapping before you hit the sack needs picture-perfect pajamas to match. Shop all our maternity (and nursing!) sleep styles, as well as the fair-isle print pair shown. We believe there is nothing cuter than a pair of PJs. Not only are they a comfortable outfit, they have a way of setting the scene. This set, in particular, pops on camera with the red Henley-neck. And, they are worth it, because you can take this picture at any point in your pregnancy, as well as after with baby. They have an underbelly waistband, plus are made for nursing. Win-win.

3. For Posting Before Hosting

You’re getting the girls together for a night in. You threw on some blush, the perfect Faux Wrap Maternity Top, and your best pair of blue jeans— now is the time to say cheese! The top is a great choice, because it is seasonless. With a lightweight material, 3/4th sleeves, and the choice of white, blue or grey… it’s a simple way to make a statement. The above-the-bump wrap belt doesn’t hurt either, especially for accentuating the whole reason you’re taking the picture! Shop all the newest maternity looks, to keep your weekly fashion fresh for the photos.

BUMP SHOT SERIES: HOW TO STYLE YOUR SHOOT

MH BumpSeries Part2 ALT Blog v2

1. Pick Your Props

a. Share your progress.
They say consistency is the key! Try incorporating the Pearhead Pregnancy Chalkboard into your photo shoots to help you keep track, and then of course, to post with your peeps.

b. Shake it up with accessories.
Adding your own personal touch, whether it be seasonal, fun or even wacky, will bring a sense of humor to your shoots. Pregnancy is a journey with a lot of emotions… capture them!

c. Show off your bump.
Belly stickers are the easiest way to showcase your bump’s growth. The Pearhead ones feature 17 stickers, starting at week 8 and going through to week 40!

2. Choose Your Background

a. Try interesting architecture.
Use archways and beautiful buildings to help outline and ultimately define your bump shot. It can act as a natural way to frame you!

b. Be inspired by nature.
No filter can replace or replicate natural lighting. Let the outdoors be your literal playground. Find the colors, textures and beauty that Mother Earth has given you.

c. Or, incorporate your neighborhood.
Have a plain white wall? Is your porch pretty? How about your cool colored door? You know they’re there for your entire pregnancy, so use them to your advantage… week after week!

For an extra tip, choose a dress in a solid color that you know will work well in all different settings, like the Rib Knit Maternity Dress in Burgundy shown.  Or do you, and shop all our maternity styles. Make sure you tag us in your bump shots with #thisisgoingtobefun @motherhoodmaternity – Happy snapping!

BUMP SHOT SERIES: TIPS FROM OUR PHOTOGRAPHER

MH BumpSeries Part1 Blog v1

Welcome to our Bump Shot Series!  There is no greater time in your life for change, an excuse to go shopping, and to take pictures of it all. Pregnancy photo shoots have been around for a while. (Remember Demi Moore on the cover of Vanity Fair?) Today, they are so much more accessible due to phones and social media.  Every day we play around like amateur photographers, so put your own experience to good use capturing all those pregnancy milestones!

Over this week we are going give you tips and inspiration on how to style your shoot, how to style yourself and how to put it all together for making moments come to life on screen! As for today… we are kicking it off with advice from an actual professional, our in-house photographer Bobby Heinemann.

Bobby is the man behind pretty much all the images you see in our stores, on our site, as well as our sister site APeainthePod.com and their stores.  He goes on shoots, works with models, and is our photographer for social media, including this blog and 40WeeksofChic! He can make everything look amazing and happens to be one of the coolest guys we know. The Creative Department is in debt to Bobby for all the beautiful images he sends our way. When he speaks, especially about his craft, we listen! We hope that his words come in handy to you as well.  Keep coming back all week for more from our Bump Shot Series!

SAVORY AND SWEET MDW SNACKS

Memorial Day: eat, drink and be pregnant...

We took some simple recipes from our friends at Fit Pregnancy and Parents Magazine. Mini-meals made with nutritious (and tasty) foods can help fight queasy tummy, ease heartburn and minimize indigestion. Whip up and enjoy these little pregnancy pick-ons for that backyard BBQ, summer kick-off party, or even just a relaxing day at home.

Let’s start with something savory: Meze Platter with Roasted Pepper Dip

Servings: 4 Prep 5 mins Cook 15 mins Start to Finish 20 mins

Ingredients
For dip:
• 3 roasted or grilled red peppers, seeded and peeled
• 1/2 cup canned white beans, rinsed and drained
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 1 small clove garlic, minced
• Salt to taste

For meze platter:
• 2 6-inch pita breads (3 ounces each)
• Cooking spray
• 20 cherry tomatoes
• 16 kalamata olives
• 1/2 English cucumber (about 1/2 pound), peeled and cut into thin spears

Make It
1.Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Place dip ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth. Put in a covered, airtight container and refrigerate until needed. (Dip will keep for 3 days, refrigerated.)
2.Cut pita into triangles, place triangles on a cookie sheet in a single layer and mist with cooking spray. Bake until toasted and crisp, about 15 minutes.
3.To assemble each meze platter: Add 1/4 cup dip to a small bowl; place on a plate; arrange one-fourth of toasted pita triangles alongside 5 cherry tomatoes, 4 olives and 2 to 3 cucumber spears.

And finish with something sweet: Yogurt Covered Fruit

Parents suggests strawberries, but we think adding in blueberries and bananas would make for that Red, White and Blue kick the holiday calls for! (They even gave the nutrition facts in case you’re into knowing…)

Ingredients and Directions:
Dip 1 lb. strawberries into one 5-oz. container Greek yogurt. Place berries on a wax-paper lined baking sheet; freeze for 1 1/2 hours. Remove 15 minutes before serving.

OUR FOUR FAVES

Easter Essentials Our Four Faves

1. STYLE: graphic maternity tees make every look a little more bumped up… quite literally

2. SKIN: pregnancy changes you, inside & out, so we are serious about what we put on the largest organ of our body, especially one that is creating life!

3. BABY: this holiday, all you need is a lot of love & some little presents – take these pacis off your list by adding them to your basket, whether that be shopping or Easter basket of course!

4. FOOD: traditional Easter bread, because carbs are always on the cravings list…

TOTAL TIME:  Prep takes about 30 minutes + Baking takes 30 minutes

MAKES: roughly 20 servings

DOUGH:

  • 2-3/4 to 3-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
(can make healthier with whole wheat flour or almond flour for an option containing less gluten)
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
    (can substitute with cane sugar)
  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup 2% milk (can replace with another nut-based milk)
  • 3 tablespoons butter (can replace with coconut oil or ghee)
  • 2 eggs (medium to large sized)
  • 1/4 cup chopped, blanched almonds (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon anise extract (optional)
  • 5 uncooked eggs, dyed

GLAZE:

  • 1 cup confectioners sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons 2% milk (or a nut-based / soy option)

Directions

  • In a large bowl, combine 1 cup flour, sugar, yeast and salt. In a large saucepan, heat milk and 2 tablespoons butter, right before it begins to boil. Then, add the dry ingredients; stir or beat rapidly with whisk for 2 minutes. Add eggs and mix them well. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  • Turn the dough on to a lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and until it has an elastic consistency, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased/ buttered bowl. Turn the dough over so both sides get greased. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, which takes about 1 hour.
  • Punch dough down and then turn it out on a lightly floured surface. Fold in the almonds and anise extract (if you chose to add them) until blended in evenly. Let the dough rest for another 10 minutes.
  • Divide the dough in half. Shape the halves in to a 24-inch rope, or to as exact as that as you can get. Twist those two ropes together loosely and place them on a greased baking sheet. You want to make them into a ring shape on the sheet by closing the ends of the twisted roped together.
  • Melt what’s left of your butter and brush it over the shaped dough. Gently separate the twists on the ropes and place your dyed eggs in. Cover and let rise until it has doubled, which is about 40 minutes.
  • Bake at 350° for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. Cool your sweet bread on a wire rack.
  • To create the glaze, combine the confectioners’ sugar, vanilla and enough milk to achieve desired consistency in a bowl. Drizzle it over the warm bread. Sprinkle with candies (we like the nonpareil kind, because it’s what our family is used to, but we aren’t bias to good old-fashioned sprinkles either!)
