DIY BUMP COSTUMES

MH HalloweenDIY Blog v1

Our Social Media Specialist got really crafty, literally, when she thought up and then executed these DIY costumes. She actually made them in our office using the items shown. With a little glue and a lot of love, we present to you:

THE DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY DISCO BALL
A tiny trip to the craft store was all our co-worker needed to create this costume. She chose the black version of the side-ruched tee, then placed the larger squares in the center and edged with the smaller to create a spherical shiny shape, perfect for the pregnancy costume that will amp up any party! We paired it with our black fold-over belly lightweight skirt, so you can dance the night away without breaking a sweat.

THE BUMPED UP GUM-BALL MACHINE
Using our basic white side-ruched maternity tee, our co-worker laid it on a flat surface and began to place the pompom balls down until they created a perfect circle. Then, she picked up each pompom, added some fabric glue, replaced it and voila— a gum-ball machine! We paired the top with our red Jessica Simpson crop maternity pants to complete the classic color combination.

THE HEART EYES EMOJI
This last one is for the minimalist mama-to-be who wants the compliment, but not the complication. This one really is as easy as 1, 2, 3: get felt, cut a circle and two heart eyes, fabric glue it on our black cold-shoulder maternity dress. Happy Halloween!

FIVE FUNDAMENTALS: WEEKEND

MH Blog FF Jen Weekend v1

For our last five fundamental style, we had to go with weekend wear! Everyone is working for the weekend, right? We have shown you occasion looks, date night, work, and lounge. Our final beauty and her bump are proving that Saturday is for the mamas!

Who: Jennifer Cho, Senior Designer

What: trimester are you in?  2nd trimester! We already have a son who is 2 and a ½. I can see myself wearing this look to the park with him.

Wear: Side-Ruched Maternity Dress

Side-Ruched Maternity Tee

Denim Maternity Jacket

When: I like tees with leggings normally, and have seen a lot of people tying the tees above the bump on Instagram. I think it’s really cute… I may just try it now!

Why: A dress is a great full outfit from early on, all the way through the end.  I think our jeans are a necessity from the very beginning, especially since my body seemed to change a lot quicker during my second pregnancy. I plan on nursing, so I will be purchasing our clip-down bras and camis. I already own some of the pull-down tanks, since I can wear them now and then after too.

FIVE FUNDAMENTALS: LOUNGE

MH Blog FF Michelle Lounge v1

Get ready to kick up your feet, settle down and sit pretty with comfy, cozy, lounge looks brought to you with our five fundamentals, modeled on our very own co-worker [and new mama!]

Who: Michelle Moran, Digital Marketing Manager

What: trimester are you in? The fourth trimester is real. I still find myself reaching for some of my comfiest maternity pieces.

Wear: Secret Fit Belly Ruched Maternity Leggings

Lace Racerback Nursing Sleep Bra in Pinot Noir

Kickin It Maternity Sweatshirt

When: The leggings and jeans I wear when running errands with my daughter, to not only feel comfortable, but also to be a little more put together.

Why: When I was pregnant I wore a lot of our five fundamental pieces. I like the jeans a lot and loved the black side-ruched dress. I would wear that one anywhere, like work or out with my husband. I was pleasantly surprised how much I used the nursing bras and camis pre-baby. I do nurse at home and pump at work, so my bras are still in rotation, as well as my tanks and camis.

FIVE FUNDAMENTALS: WORK

MH Blog FF Nicole Work v1

We have used the five fundamentals to create a date night outfit, a gender reveal and a shower look! Using our very own Motherhood co-workers, our next beauty with a bump is our pregnant professional, showing us how to do the work week in style.

Who: Nicole Boucher, Senior Web Merchandiser

What: trimester are you in?  3rd! We are not finding out the gender, which I feel like is the most exciting part, even though people cannot believe we want to wait. I didn’t know the sex of any of my children! Stay tuned to see if baby is a boy or girl.

Wear: Indigo Blue Secret Fit Belly Dark Rinse Skinny Maternity Jeans

Elbow Sleeve Side-Ruched Maternity Tee in White

Tie Detail Maternity Sweater Cardigan in Gray

When: I love easy dresses because I have been pregnant all summer, but I wear leggings all the time, even to work.

Why: I think you should start wearing maternity jeans and pants, even if you think you don’t need to, because they’re just so much more comfortable! They’re stretchy, but also more flattering. I tend to wear basic colors, like black. It helps me extend my outfits for week or weekend with my girls.

FIVE FUNDAMENTALS: GENDER REVEAL

MH Blog FF Sara GenderReveal v2

Earlier this week we saw our gorgeous coworker Katie show us how to wear one of the five FUNdamentals for a special occasion, and we have another beauty and her bump wearing our other Gender Reveal dress. Read on to see how she styles the essentials.

Who: Sara Kauffman, Senior Designer of Denim and Jeans

What trimester are you in? I am in my 3rd trimester and due September 19th. My son’s middle name is Hudson, because I met my husband on the Hudson in NY, and my daughter’s middle name will be June, since that’s the month we met… sappy I know!

Wear: Gender Reveal Lace Maternity

When: I would wear it out to a wedding or a shower, even my own. I actually would have worn it for Easter, since I was looking for a dress this past spring!

Why: I just want to make good jeans, not just good maternity jeans. I strive to make all the pairs authentic. So, I am of course a jeans and t-shirt girl. My favorite pair is one with a side panel, because it looks a real jean, even after pregnancy. Plus, I was pregnant mainly in the warm months and the side panel doesn’t create a lot of heat on the belly. I’ve also got my eye on some of the patterned nursing tops; I love anything with a print!

FIVE FUNDAMENTALS: BABY SHOWER

MH Blog FF Katie BabyShower v1

We’re back again with our second co-worker helping us show off how the five FUNdamentals look five different ways! This beauty and her bump are showing us an OCCASION LOOK, specifically Baby Shower.

Who: Katie Graf, Manager of Store Operations

What: trimester are you in? I am 38.5 weeks pregnant! This is my first time being pregnant and am expecting a girl. Her name will be Margaret Reed, but we’ll call her Maggie.

Wear: Printed Wrap Maternity Maxi Dress

When: I would totally wear this dress in my everyday life. I wish it was available when I had my shower! This dress, in particular, I could style for work or a wedding, depending on the shoe. I am all about versatility.

Why: I am a jean and tee girl for sure. I like the Secret Fit Belly ones the most because I like how the panel holds everything in. I really gravitate toward comfort over anything else. I love the tanks and tees with side-ruching; I wear them with leggings for when I work out.

FIVE FUNDAMENTALS: DATE NIGHT

MH Blog FF Agata DateNight v3

Let’s meet the first of our wonderful co-workers who is helping show off the five fundamentals worn five ways. This beauty and her bump are representing date night!

Who: Agata Reyes, VP of Strategic Partnerships

What: trimester are you in? 2nd trimester! I’m due December 20th and although we have a name picked out, I won’t tell anyone just yet, because I like it and don’t want any negative judgements haha.

Wear: Secret Fit Belly Skinny Black Ankle Jeggings  –BumpStart Tee  – Faux Leather Maternity Jacket

When: I also can wear them to work if we aren’t meeting with external vendors, partners or clients.

Why: I cannot imagine going through pregnancy without good stretchy maternity jeans. I am guilty of having four pairs now… black, white, grey and classic dark blue. (Hopefully my husband isn’t reading this!) Anyway, I plan on wearing them for a while after the baby too. I need to be realistic, because as much as I’d love to jump back into my old jeans, I may not. That’s what all my new mom friends tell me.  And, of course you need shirts; I like a simple t-shirt in the same colors as my jeans! But currently, I am into stripes too- there’s something fun about horizontal stripes on a pregnant belly.

FIVE FUNDAMENTALS

MH Blog FiveFundamentals 2017 v2

Mix them, match them, make them yours from maternity to motherhood. We want shopping to be fun, even when outfitting your bump!  We know this may be new territory and tricky to navigate. That’s why we’re here to show you how fun it actually can be by highlighting the five FUNdamental styles that will kick start your maternity wardrobe – bras, dresses, leggings, jeans and tees!

Dress them up, dress them down, take them to work or to lounge around – wherever you are going, you’ll be covered, comfortable and stylish. We’ve enlisted six of our very own Motherhood moms to show you how they wear their FUNdamentals through their pregnancy and beyond. Over the next month, we will introduce you to each of them to find out their favorites, but first, let’s talk about the fashion-forward five!

BRAS The bra for maternity days to nursing nights

Everyone knows their bellies get bigger when pregnant, and it’s no surprise breasts do too. Some women welcome this change, while others find it hard to navigate their new curves. We pride ourselves on creating soft, stretchy, and supportive maternity bras that are crafted with nursing functionality built in. We dare you to find a style you don’t love because we have seamless bras, lace bralettes, demi bras, wireless bras and full coverage bras.

DRESSES The ready-to-wear dress

What do we mean by ready-to-wear? We mean the one-hit-wonder; the dinner date to Sunday brunch; the throw-on-and-go; the wear-to-work and the weekend must… It’s the dress that complements your new curves, no matter what style you prefer. From your shower look to running errands, having at least one in your arsenal is a wise move.

LEGGINGS The live-in leggings

And we mean live in. Our most versatile piece can be styled with a stylish blouse, fitted with a fitted tee, and dressed under a dress. They are stretchy, of course, but they also retain their soft structure for use after baby makes his or her debut into the world. Lift the belly panel up for support under tops, or fold it over to create a structured waistband, a layered look, or for post-partum wear. The question on whether leggings are pants has been answered: they are!

DENIM The new favorite jeans

Has there ever been a piece of clothing more loved than a good pair of jeans? The answer is no, and that’s because denim has become like a second skin to the wearer. Don’t despair; we have your new favorite pair ready to be worn every day – we don’t judge! With the Secret Fit Belly, side panels or an underbelly waist, add a pair or two to your closet and make casual Fridays blend into Saturdays, which inevitably become Sundays. They’re so comfortable, you’ll want to feel the blues all week long.

TEES The classic tee

Since when did basic get a bad rap? No closet is complete without a t-shirt that you turn to when you are craving comfort. A V-neck, crew neck or scoop neck – we have them all. We even have graphic tees for when you want to speak from the bump. Find your shirt of choice and revel in its versatility. There is no wrong way to wear this classic staple. Go ahead… be basic.

WHAT’S IN STORE? DENIM SHAPES AND SIZES

Find your Denim with our in-store experts

We took a little trip to the store for Denim Week to see what styles are giving our customers the blues. Of course, we mean the good blues, as in jeans! From over the belly, under the bump, and all shapes and sizes in between, we wanted to see what a store experience is like for our customer. We sat down with Assistant Manager, Sophie Tuy, in our Cherry Hill, NJ store to ask her the benefits of shopping in-store and actually feeling, trying and seeing the styles.

Motherhood: What is the first thing you do when someone walks in?

Sophie: I personally ask what the reason is for them to shop here today. Usually they’ll say it’s their first-time shopping. I like to act as a friend, you know, fill them in on what they should be buying in their first trimester; it’s all about making her feel comfortable.

Motherhood: Is it normally first time shoppers?

Sophie: I would say that 40% of the time I’ve seen them before. This is their home for the next nine months, so I like to make them feel welcome. I offer her some water, sit her down, and ask her exactly what she is looking for or how I can help her.

Motherhood: Why do you feel an expectant customer should come to their store to shop?

Sophie:  They need to come in to feel the fabrics, try on the items they like, and see how the clothes are going to grow with them. The first time they come to the store we size them. I always ask for her pre-pregnancy size. If she is a small normally, she will be a small here. They don’t always believe me, but I swear, the styles are made to be easy to shop, and then worn throughout!

Motherhood: What do most moms-to-be come in looking for?

Sophie: In this location, we get clients across the board and a wide range of ages. We have to get to know them and ask them what stores they shop at before. Knowing their personal style allows us to better pinpoint how their fashion translates to maternity.

Motherhood: What is the first type of clothing they come for?

Sophie: Jeans! I would say first time moms usually need a new pair between 16 and 20 weeks, but women who are on a second or third pregnancy want to be comfortable earlier. I ask her about her pre-pregnancy size, or measure her waist and hips, then help her pick out the styles she is interested in.

Motherhood: What exactly do S, M, L and Plus mean in terms of sizing?

Sophie: Small is 26-27, while 28-29 is usually medium range. A size large is 30-31. We also carry plus size jeans. They are sizes 1X-3X, usually a size 12-16 in pre-pregnancy numbers. And, we have some extra small sizes, which would be a 24-25.

Motherhood: What are the current best-sellers in denim?

Sophie: All of the V-pocket styles; they keep looking good even as she grows. And Jessica Simpson jeans are always at the top of the list!

Motherhood: What jean styles do you see trending for fall?

Sophie: Distressed jeans. A lot of boyfriend and distressed with a plaid shirt and a casual tee.

Motherhood: Besides the face-to-face experience, what is another benefit of shopping in store?

Sophie: Besides coming in and trying things on, I think that women really like our gift bag. All first-time shoppers get the gift bag from our Perks Program. It’s filled with samples, maybe a bottle, coupons and savings. People are always asking for that gift bag!
