Celebrating Grandparents Day with a Q + A with Cathy Alba

In honor of National Grandparents Day this Sunday, we thought we would catch up with one particular grandparent, Cathy Alba; yes mom to Jessica! Grandparents hold a special place in their family’s lives and Cathy is no exception. A grandmother of 4, Cathy is also The Honest Company’s Senior Brand Educator. Read on to hear more about the role she plays in her family and family business and don’t forget to tell us about the role your own grandparents play in the comments below!Cathy Alba Grandparents Day

What do you enjoy most about being a grandma? I enjoy being 100% present and in the moment with my grandchildren. With my children, I was working full time, while my husband and I were raising our children. While I still work full time now, I am older, a little wiser and more organized. I just get to concentrate on them. As a young adult, life was fast and crazy, and still is at times, but with maturity, I handle it differently.  My priorities have shifted with age.

I also enjoy the little mannerisms that I pick up on from my grandchildren, that remind me of my own children when they were young, which sometimes brings me to tears.  Even when they test their boundaries, they remind me of what their parents did at their age, and now I don’t sweat the small stuff anymore. I find it quite hilarious!

By the way, I’m blessed with 4 grandchildren, so far.  My son, Joshua, and his wife, Nikki, have Carter (10) and Brooklyn (6).  My daughter Jessica, and her husband Cash, have Honor (7), and Haven (4).  They all call my husband, Papa, and me, Nana.

How is being a grandma different from being a mom? I’m so much more relaxed, more patient, and don’t have the pressure of the 24hr mom I used to be.  Also, experiencing and assisting with the births of my daughter’s two children, gave me an overwhelming, and emotional experience, only a Grandmother (Nana) could receive.

What activity do you enjoy most with your grandkids? I enjoy swimming, snorkeling, and amusement parks, to name a few of the active ones.  I also enjoy the quiet times, bedtime story time, arts and crafts, and cuddling, and watching their favorite movies with them.  There are so many, I can’t just pick one! Any activity with them make me feel younger, and more energetic.

What’s your role in the Honest Company? I am a Senior Brand Educator.  I educate the retailers that carry our product, help organize and speak at store events with customers, throughout the country, and soon, internationally.

What are your favorite Honest products? 1. Honest Face and Body Oil, 2. Honest Healing Balm, 3. Honest wipes, 4. Honest Deodorant, 5. Honest Face and Body Lotion, 6. Honest Multi-Surface Cleaner, 7. Honest Laundry Detergent.

Thanks you so much for letting me share a little part of my Beautiful Life with you all! -Cathy

The Honest Company Loves Destination Maternity!

Team members from The Honest Company, including Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer Christopher Gavigan, came to visit Destination Maternity’s headquarters last week, bringing along some fun surprises! Christopher and team started the day bright and early to decorate our lobby with balloons and flowers.

Christopher hosted several meet-and-greets with our associates throughout the day, sharing the backstory of some of Honest’s best-selling products, many of which were created as a result of customer feedback. Each Destination Maternity team member received a tote bag filled with goodies including a trio of Honest’s lip balm, hand sanitizer spray and the healing balm– my personal favorite which has also received Allure’s Best of Beauty award. Head over to our Instagram for more photos from this most exciting and memorable day!

Inside Alicia’s Registry: Top Picks for the 1st Time Mom

DPP_0207One of our own, Alicia, is expecting later this summer and we’ve asked her to share her registry must haves as a first-time mom. Have you used any of these items? Alicia and I would love to know what you think! Share your comments and the must-have items on your registry below! –OliviaAlicia's Registry WE3Stroller:  BOB Revolution Flex Stroller

My stroller checklist is pretty simple: safe, comfortable, lightweight and foldable! That way, it can go in and out of the car, plus is easy to jog and run with. I settled on the BOB Revolution Stroller, as it hits all of my must haves. It doesn’t hurt that is has a lot of cool, techy features too!

Baby Carrier: ERGObaby 360 Carrier

I plan to be a mom-on-the-go, so I looked for a carrier with different holding positions (this one has 4,) one that has comfort and size customization for both me and the baby. I think it will be perfect for when my little one wants to be snug and held, but I need to be hands free.

Nursing Pillow: The Honest Company Nursing Pillow or The Boppy

A nursing pillow is great for all moms – nursing or not! It’s not only awesome for supporting your baby while breastfeeding, but also great for tummy time, learning to sit up and to help prop them up for the perfect photo. I plan on using the heck out of this thing!

Décor: Babyprints Deluxe Wall Frame

Babies change so much in their first year and I plan on capturing every cute moment! A photo frame is a special way to display the memories.  I also love a good photo-op and these age blocks are an awesome prop while documenting my growing babe.

Swaddles & Sleepsacks: Aden + Anais Muslin Swaddle BlanketHalo Sleepsack

Swaddles are an awesome multi-use item.  The tight swaddles and sleepsacks are perfect for keeping baby cozy, hopefully resulting in a lot of sweet slumber (for the baby’s sake and mine!) And since I plan on nursing, they will make great covers and oversized burp cloths for a little boob and puke protection.

Diaper Bag: Honest Carryall Diaper Bag

A chic diaper bag is a must! I’m seriously craving this Honest Diaper bag; it’s super stylish yet functional. It has stroller hook options, a changing pad and tons of easy access pockets inside for keeping the craziness organized.

Honest Founder Christopher Gavigan on Fatherhood + What He Wants Most for Father’s Day

Guest Editor: Christopher Gavigan, Founder and Chief Product Officer of The Honest Company

In honor of Father’s Day, we are kicking the holiday weekend off with a special guest post from Christopher Gavigan, father of three and one of the founders of The Honest Company! Christopher is also the Company’s Chief Product Officer and he and Honest have had quite the busy week; the Company announced a forthcoming beauty line and Christopher and cofounder Jessica Alba ventured to DC to lobby for toxic chemical reform. I am so glad he found a few moments to do some Q and A! Keep reading for an inside look at Christopher’s most important role as dad and to hear how he and wife Jessica Capshaw (that’s Dr. Arizona Robbins for all of you Grey’s Anatomy fans!), will be spending the weekend!Christopher Family

What do you enjoy most about being a dad? Being a parent is one of life’s eternal purposes – being connected to someone is enormously humbling to think about, but in its daily intricacies, it’s so enjoyable and incredibly fun (most of the time!) I love being a part of intentional participation in my kids’ lives with my wife. Together, we join alongside them and try to do our best to lead by example. Kids need quality, not quantity, so we are all in when we are with them; that grounds me to slow down, be present and give myself. Anyone will agree that undoubtedly feels so, so good.

How will you be celebrating? I’ll be on the East End of Long Island, New York with my kids and wife. We will “play it by ear” (as my father used to say) and wake with the kids. Then, I’ll make my famous Daddy Pancakes with them, which is whole wheat batter filled with plant-based proteins and fresh fruit topped with VT maple syrup. We’ll let the day unfold after that. Maybe some beach playing and swimming in the Atlantic, or scoot to a yoga or SoulCycle class with my wife, and then a calm evening of lawn games and an outdoor picnic, which hopefully includes lobster. I’m no doubt abundantly blessed!

Okay, so how about work- what’s that like? My days at Honest are filled with (intentionally and literally) running through the office; we are a mission-based business with so much more to accomplish. I truly love leading a culture of innovation and change-makers focused on creating healthier, non-toxic products for today’s family. It’s a revolution of awareness, transparency and integrity. My Honest days are filled with joining our team in developing better products, executing with excellence, putting out fires (we are the Honest Company not the “perfect company”) and lifting up our employee base with gratitude, collaboration and passion. I have the best job in the world!

What are your favorite products? You know that’s like asking me which child I love the most… impossible for me to answer as the Product Ambassador at Honest. I use all our products all the time, and continually have new development samples and optimized formulas (in small white bottles with labels) all over my house. My wife Jessica despises them. I slather my kids’ spray surfaces in the home – quick optimization and refinement (insights primarily harvested from our own Honest members) is how we’ve humbly been able to deliver delight and build our loyal base. Overall, I’m a fanatic about our Healing Balm, Vetiver Deodorant, Multi-Surface Spray, Laundry Detergent and Air + Fabric Fresheners.

Any Father’s Day gift you want or are excited for? It’s unattainable, but because you said any I would have to choose to bottle certain moments of my life. The more you know, the less you really need. I have a full and fortunate life, and I’d like to relive those special moments of times spent with my family and kids. The problem is… I’d need a very big place to store all those bottles!

You can shop The Honest Company’s products, which are perfect for new and expecting moms and their families in our stores and online! Some of my favorites are the sanitizing spraylip balm trio and body oil! -Olivia

Mommy Must-Have: The Honest CarryAll Satchel

liv liv2The Honest Company_2015-05-11_13-53-53Did you know that we now carry The Honest Carryall Satchel? As a mom who is always on the go, having to switch back and forth between a handbag, work tote and a diaper bag throughout the week was a huge source of frustration for me… that is until I test drove the Satchel last week. With convenient pockets on the outside for easy and quick access to the essentials like my keys, wallet and my son Grey’s snacks, and tons of hidden storage inside, it’s been so much easier to stay organized. Because it looks great, too, and features gold hardware, my go-to accent color, I’ve been using it for work and weekends. I love it so much I plan to use it even after Grey is out of diapers! –Olivia
